I am looking for information on the sealing of hides and skulls. What is the actuall process of sealing? Is it a tag or air seal?

They'll pull a molar and then put a metal locking tag on it, at least thats what they did to mine a few years back.

Its a metal tag, some yers plastic but its an actual seal that must be left on the hide until the taxidermist gets it or until its been transported from Alaska. (Page 19, 2005 reg book)

Sealing

I just did it yesterday. Fish and Game asks some questions about harvest location, amount of meat salvaged, takes a look at your license, measures the skull and extracts a tooth, and also sexes the bear. This year it's a plastic seal that they place onto the hide and also the skull

Bear Sealing

Bear Sealing

I had one sealed last June by Alpha Furs the day after I shot it. They had me fill out a form and put the metal band through the eye socket. The skull was separate from the hide. It looks just like the one they give you when you buy the $25.00 brown bear tag.
FYI, a guy just got popped by F&G when he took it in to be sealed and didn't have evidence of sex attached to the hide.

Evidence of sex is important. Just cuz it's a big un, they won't say.......male. Do a good job skinning those bears.

I have a feeling they are using what they have on hand and an occasional tooth, 2 weeks ago in Anchorage they put a metal tag on my skull and hide and left the teeth alone and asked the same questions as Big D mentioned above. Proof of sex was very important!!

Prood of sex

Prood of sex

The troopers ticketed 3 or 4 guys in PWS, all for not having proof of sex naturally attached to the hide. Be careful out there!!!

Bear Sealing

Bear Sealing

Bears can be sealed at all ADF&G offices and by some taxidermist. In most hunts you have 30 days from the killdate to have your bear sealed. Both the skinned out skull and hide must be brought in unfrozen along with your hunting license. A tooth is pulled on all brown bears for ageing. Sometimes a tooth is pulled on black bears if requested by research biologist. A tag is locked on the skull and hide and the hunter is asked questions about his hunt. Be sure to leave proof of sex attached to your hide. You may have someone else seal your hide for you if you fill out a temporary sealing form (available at ADF&G offices) and send it in with them. In addition, a measurement of the skull width and length is taken and added togather. That number is the official score. Good luck on your hunts!

Taxidermist who seal?

Taxidermist who seal?

Does anyone know off-hand of taxidermist who will seal the hide for you and does a good tanning job? I'm not real confident in my ability to skin out the skull and paws since this will be my first black bear hunt. I would like to leave those parts intact and take the whole hide directly to the taxidermist the same day or second day after the kill and not have to take the hide to another location for sealing. Thanks.

Tim tans his own hides right out in the valley. Does a great job too. He is currently working on my black bear from last fall. He takes care of everything. He's in the phone book and located just off Four Corners in the valley, (only an hour from Anchorage).
