I was at Walmart last night with my wife and making my usual ammo check in the sporting goods. This particular Walmart sells some firearms and they had a whole rack of savage axis 6.5 creedmoors for $342 and I had a kind of crazy idea. If the action is good enough because m the axis, buy one and slap a 20" .358 Winchester barrel on it. Would the cheap savage axis be a good candidate for such a build?

I don’t know about slap, but that JES reboring I think is your best bet for a 35. I talked to him about a project. Sounds reasonable. I don’t know if you can do it with a 358 winchester and a creedmore. Seems like the creedmore has a fatter case. 86 creedmore? 35 creed?

There are competing opinions regarding the Savage rifles and the axis. I myself am a fan of the Savage rifles. There are a lot of upgrades that can be done to the bolts to get around some of the complaints people have. There is an online forum Savage shooters that has a lot of good info. One of the concerns with the axis is the factory firing pin spring tends to break eventually . But it is an accurate inexpensive rifle. You can swap the barrel yourself.

Welcome. I don’t know about the axis but I have 2 110s. My wifes 338 federal has the typical extraction problem. I wish I would have known about before buying.

I thought the shoulder was pushed out on the creedmore.
That’s correct. Could probably do the barrel swap, but not a rebore.

I had an older Axis in 30-06 and I had a hard time getting rid of it. Doesn’t seem to be many fans. Trigger was pretty rough. Axis II has the accutrigger.

If I went through with the project it would be a complete barrel swap. Not sure yet, it's just an idea that hit me looking at the rack of rifles. I could probably get a 20" barrel made by McGowan or caliber for a few hundred and have a handy little brush gun for less than $700.

I have an Axis I bought in 2017 in 243. Shoots close to MOA, trigger was junk so I replaced it with a Rifle Basix. Quality can be on or off, also issues with light primer strikes are known to exist.
