Anyone else going to give it a try in two weeks?? Any recommendations from people who have done it in the past? We are planning to hunt up at Grant Lake.

I'll probably give it a go. Are you sure that Grant Lake is going to be open? Have they announced the open areas yet??

no way can they know what will be opened yet. likely by the end of the week you can get solid info on what will NOT open...
as more people become aware of and willing to hunt the registration hunts i have noticed overall fewer units being opened, and more use of "archery only" as a management tool.
used to be you could count on a few units across kachemak bay being opened to reg hunts, now only one or two of the more difficult to access hunts will possibly open.

I called the other day and they said they won't make any decisions until the last weekend in October. That means you get only a couple of days to plan because you have no idea where it will be open.

Where across Kachemake bay? Will they have any goat hunts by registration out of Homer? I have my boat in the marina and am looking to do some sort of hunting. Could you give me a bit more info. I completely agree with the archery only hunts.
Marc - As others have mentioned, there is no way to know what will be open, including which units across Kachemak Bay. F&G needs to compile the harvest data first (the season ended two days ago) and then determine which areas can sustain a greater take of goats. I was hoping for info sooner, but it looks like we'll have to wait.

Sorry wasnt trying to mislead, we don't know if grant lake area will be open, I guess we had heard that it had been a miserable year for those that had drawings, just going off friends from past years success. I guess we shall see in a week or so.

before i finally drew a tag i watched road accessable areas closely, hoping that they would open to a registration hunt...my observation is that it is just not likely to happen anymore.
look at the thread on hunting the road system for bears..it is just too crowded to alllow an over-the-counter permit for rifle hunting in (relatively) easy access goat areas.
the possibility of an abrupt ...as in before F&G knows it and can close the unit...overharvest is just too great, thus the archery-only (IBEP required) registration hunts.
the only hunts i would look to see open down here would be the outer coast units and possibly the bradley lake unit.
of course, kodiak will probably have plenty of registration units open, i have heard rumours that some of the hunts over there may go to straight registration as there are so many goats.

I sure hope not. I would think that would lead to a lot of crowded hunts as some of the zones have only a few acess points. If they get pushed to far to soon by over crowded hutners racing after them I would think that wouldn't help meet the target harvest.
As far as road acess hunts right now it looks like a warmer year than last which should lead to more people out as well. Last year I walked into the spencer glacier area & it was between 0 - 5 degrees both nights. OF course the goats weren't there so it didn't mattter anyway.
On another note Dave, are you going to have your boat available for transport to the bays for waterfowl next month ?

Fish and game will release registration permits on 27 Oct, so not much time, I have backtracked thru the year to see what areas normally get a crack at goats, only a couple close to the road, hopefully I can have a friend fly the area a day or two before we hike in. I am thinking that hunting kodiak would be better.
