Worst salmon eggs for bait for coho ?

Worst salmon eggs for bait for coho ?

"Red eggs make the worst bait of any salmonid. Best to worst for quality bait.

King..
Chum…
Steel…
Pink…
Coho…
Sockeye… dead last.

Certainly NOT listed in order of abundance.

Sometimes beggars can't be choosers

Worst bait ? (don't tell valley silvers, :) )

Valley fishermen usually hook the silver on a sharp hook when they taste test the egg cluster. LOL :)

They do milk less but hold color & cluster well, + there are some tricks
to enhance scent. ( Few fishermen share all of their egg curing secrets )

My batch is almost ready for silver season, drying some, then will be bagged & frozen :

Been using them for over 30 years with good success.

Kinda hard to get king eggs lately :)
Pink eggs clusters don't hold together well.
Who keeps/kills chum ? for the eggs ?
I like silver eggs, but gotta catch & cure them, by then I have enough fish in the freezer.

Maybe it's just another Alaskan "Myth", :) :) LOL
( science behind the claim ? ? )
I use egg clusters, not single eggs,

be nice to see the same fisherman on the same day in the same water
do a test (not know which eggs are on the line )

( I've caught silvers on orange ear plugs , flo-pink survey tape, silver gill plates ......... :) :) )

Anyway
eggs are good for a few more days if anyone wants them. Then compost.

Where did you read this? It doesn't seem accurate to me. The fishing is so hot with any type of cured eggs, that there is no real way to tell a difference IMHO. I usually only resort to eggs when I get desperate. It's almost too easy!

I think it may be when curing them to single eggs.
Maybe sockeye eggs are pretty small ?
Not sure where the fly'n-doc got his info ?

I was thinking the same thing. Life long Alaskan here and never heard nor experinced this first hand. I think you have a great idea, lets find a ggod place when the silvers are in and do a little testing! I bet my "humpy" eggs beats yours!!

Quality cured eggs are quality cured eggs, salmon of origin does not matter. The biggest difference is there are so many more eggs from a big female king. Those have been hard to come by the last several years.

Personal experience with lotsa eggs from all 6 species.

Obviously, YMMV.

I'm not an egg guru by any means
Just prefer fishing flies & lures, less messy & more effective for me .
Hate to hook & release with eggs.

Mostly for silvers . Sometimes threw them out for the kids when eggs for kings was OK.
When catching coho was a must & they got spooked from lures, eggs seemed to turn the tide. (usually clear water)

Almost always have red or silver eggs & maybe just lucky, but they seem to work OK.

Sit & soak method, in murky water, spin-n-glo , a little anise oil & garlic salt :topjob:
