Question: why don't my recent posts appear in "New Posts?"

When I post a thread, or an answer to a thread, that thread will not appear under "New Posts".

What am I doing wrong?

I beleive that is because you already viewed the thread you started or the response to a thread. Once someone else has posted to either of these they will appear as new posts. If you want to find them faster select your name and then view all posts by you.
