Hey Guys,
You all have been so helpful so far. Currently I am in the planning stages of my DIY Moose/Black Bear Hunt and am currently addressing my plans after the hunt. I consider this to be one of the most important parts of the hunt.
Here are my notes so far. Any advice, items that you would change, or items that I have left out?
Getting Meat Back to your home
For Meat: Meat will be donated to the local village. For any meat that you do not want to be donated, we will need to be sure to package it and place in a freezer the night before flying. We will bring the meat back with us as luggage (note we will have to pay for additional luggage fees since we will be checking three bags with the airline (2 coolers of meat and rifle case). If you are going to go over the 50lb weight limit be sure to take advantage of the overage cost and get as close to 100lbs as possible. But do not go over 100lbs as it could be rejected at the airport.
Ship items, such as food to Bethel in coolers. Then use the coolers to bring the meat back on the airplane. If you are shipping items in the coolers that you do not plan to dispose of in Bethel, make sure you bring extra plastic totes for shipping these items it you are going to fill the coolers with meat.
Getting Hides and Taxidermy Work Mounted in Alaska
There are a couple of different options:
The majority of the people ship to Knights Taxidermy in Anchorage from Bethel.
Knights Taxidermy
7329 Artic Blvd.
Anchorage, Alaska 99518
(907) 344-5501
Costs add up quick doing this but I have read good reviews about Knights work.
See a listing of the cost of different services below:
50% deposit required on all items.
Expedite/Handling Fee: 1[SUP]St[/SUP] animal is $150, Second animal is $100
SKULL CAP CLEANING FEE: $85 for Moose
BOXING/CRATING FEES – SALT DRIED HIDES & ANTLERS/HORNS
$20.00 skulls (Bear/Wolf)
$30.00 capes and hides
$50.00 skull and hide (Bear/Wolf)
$200.00 Moose antlers and cape
*NOTE: Multi-piece packaging rates available*
SEALING OF TROPHIES – $75.00 State required sealing of Bears, and furbearers. If trophy is sealed only. If a job is done by the shop there is no charge for sealing.
EXPEDITING INCLUDES: Trophies logged in & Tagged, handling of skins, inspected, re-salted if necessary, & arranged shipping. EXPEDITING DOES NOT INCLUDE: Crating, fleshing or, shipping costs.
Moose European Mount: $495
Fleshing Prices: Bear $50 for ears, nose, lips; Skin $170. Moose: Ears, Nose Lips: $120 Cape: $80
Moose Shoulder Mount $2,060, Detachable Antlers: $410
Blackbear Life Size Mount: $5,4100
BlackBear Rug: average $1475
May want to compare cost of Taxidermy work to those in the lower 48. May be cheaper to do the following:
Ship items to Knights, have them expedite items to local taxidermists to perform work. Need to make sure items are salted and fleshed properly.
Shipping Gear Back to the US.
You can ship into Bethel using UPS but you can only ship out of Bethel using USPS.
Make departing flight after 12 noon on the 26[SUP]th[/SUP] (flown from the Bush on the 25[SUP]th[/SUP]). This will ensure that the post office will be open to ship items back.
