overnight halibut trip from homer

has anybody fished a over night trip if so what did u think of it also if u have any tips on catching larger fish i would love some imfo if you are willing 2 share it has any one used uv spreaders or sents or flashing squid or glow sticks and are they ok 2 use thank u for youre replies

I have done this trip for the last five years with a church group. If you are looking for meat for the freezer then this is the trip for you. If you are looking for "trophy" size halibut, then you might want to look for a day trip. The new boat that ACM has is great, bunks to sleep in and lots of room to move around. bring along a spinning rod and jig some silvers once you have your butts on board.

Adison, please explain this comment. Won't you catch big fish too if you go overnight? I have 2 over night trips and a day trip booked w/ ACM in August. I really want to know how the action is overnight w/ the double limit of halibut during the midnight sun halibut run.

BTW does anyone else besides ACM do the overnight trip for the double limit?

I did it this year. Nothing big 40#'ers but had a blast. There was one other boat there that we did not see until we started heading back to the dock

You may get into bigger fish, but more than likely you will limit out on smaller fish. I brought up probably 35 fish and took home my limit of 4 with ACM. I thik I might have brought home 40lbs of fish...maybe.

40 lbs!!! That's all??? I'm thinking that if you limit out on 4 halibut and just got 40 pounds of filets out of them and each halibut is about 50% meat then that means you caught 4 twenty pound chickens. Is this right?

That's not alot for an overnight trip. Makes me want to reconsider going overnight.

When did you go? Did you go w/ ACM? How many ppl on the boat for the overnight trip?

I'm still planning to go in August.

We just got back from our alaska trip. Included was an overnight out of home with North Country. We were tossing back 30-50 lb Halibut all day and ended up the first day with a limit between 50-80lb. The second day we didn't have as much time to fish, so ended up keeping a number of smaller fish, although we did pick up a 134lb butt as our second to last fish. Overall our average size for the two days was probably around 60 lbs judging by the amount of meat we ended up with.

went with acm july 17/18 there were 35 pepole onboard they fish 17 rods at a time wich they dont tell you up front but its still a good deal in all

It was a small boat with 4 of us. Absolute blast. We are already trying to figure out a way to convince the wives we need to go again.

Walleye - I'm guessing your trip was a different type of overnight trip than the one most of this thread was about. Were you guys on the "long-range" trip where you slept onboard and were fed? Did you go out near Shuyak Island (off Kodiak)?

I have been out several times with ACM iin the last 5 years...but not this year. Generally I have taken 30 to 80 pounds of fillet home. Generally they run out to Barren Island area and have always caught small halibut the first night. ALthough 3 years ago was out and they got a school of 20 to 40 lbs halibut up to the surface in 250 feet of water....what a riot. THere were candlefish everywhere and a couple of the guys took halibut on flyrods. The deckhand took the crews dinner halibut by putting a piece of herring on the gaff and when a chicken came over to try and take it he gaffed it.....funny thing to watch.

The next morning the weather turned very nasty and after having nearly everyone chumming they headed back.....we got to the point coming into Cook Inlet and it was out of the wind so they stopped to try and get everyone their second limit. In about 70 feet of water those who hadn't caught their fish proceeded to pull up 3 butts over 200 lbs.....the crew addmitted it was just dumb luck but it was pretty impressive with those massive butts spread over the foredeck.

I've found it to be a long night with little sleep but if you want to get a couple of limits for the freezer, it is a good way to go. Obviously, as someone pointed out, if you go on a smaller charter of 4 to 6 it is much easier for them to go after bigger halibut......

You're right, we were on a long-range trip. After the last couple of messages I think I get the picture.

I did an ACM overnight trip several years back on the big boat with 26 people on board. We hit a chicken hole around 11 pm, got our fist limit by midnight, the bit was still on, we were tired, so got our second limit after midnight and called it a day, a long day at that.

You need to be releastic in your expectations and realize that to get 26 people limits two days in a row, means the boat is going to run to chicken holes.

I'd rather be on a more selective six pack for a day trip going after bigger fish, or go on an overnighter long range trip focusing on the big fish.
