Took a run up the little sue on Sunday looking for a moose to fill a friend of mines DM400 tag. Ran a good 20 to 25 miles up river before turning around to head back down (drift when we could). Couple miles later I get an oil alarm off my smart gauge, head for the bank and tie up to investigate.

The bulk jug had 2 gallons in it but it had not been filling the small tank on the block. Pulled the pick up tube out and found the bottom screen plug with a jelly substance, looks like coagulated oil. :hmmmm:

Has anyone had issues with the Mercury DFI oil before? Anyone running a sport jet motor switched over to an aftermarket DFI oil?

I run the Amsoil Hp Marine or the Interceptor synthetic if HP is not available.

The Oil you choose should not effect the pumping of your oil from main tank to engine tank. While I appriciate the responses, I can not see how a particular oil can make a difference in pumping from one tank to another. You clearly have a issue in tank pressure causing it not to feed to the small tank. I am not saying one brand of oil is better than another... just saying you have a engine driven pump pressure issue.. not a oil brand issue.

Nate, We have seen this in two other boats this year. Mercury did have some oil that had a bad additive in it that was made in 2015. We have an entire drum of it. The oil is good but as you have experienced you"ll need to clear the screen if issues come up. When you buy a jug make sure it's manufactured after 2015.

If if you have the original receipt and jug bring it in for a warranty exchange.

Issues can also arise when mixing brands of oil. Either on their own can be fine. Mix them and the can gel enough to plug up filters. Causing your no transfer issue.

I had the same problem this summer. Forced me to learn about the oil injection system in my Sportjet.

Tom,

I had a oil contamination issue and was asking if anyone else had this issue using the Mercury DFI oil. I was also inquiring what other people use for DFI oil in an attempt to get away from $40+ a gallon oil. I have confirmed there is no issue in tank pressure. the main pickup tube screen was plugged and the small inline filter going to the small reservoir on the block was also restricted.

FYI there is no engine driven pump on an OPTI it uses the crank case pressure to push the oil from the bulk tank....

Thanks for the info Mel, I'm pretty sure that the last 2.5 gallon jug I had was from 2015, didn't use the Boat much in 2016...I attempted to "filter" the oil via a funnel with a metal screen with no success as it would plug up. I tossed the oil and got a fresh 2.5 gallon Jug...
