I've read a lot abt Continental Engines and some abt Lycomings too etc.

In Aug 2009 the logs say the A&P installed 15W50 oil. In July 2010 Jay @ COE installed Aeroshell 100.

When I changed the oil and cleaned the screen on 7/21/2010 @ MRI I put in Aeroshell 80.

Now reading the info, much from TCM and from AOPA, it seems the reg uni-weight oil is/was preferred.

Whats your thghts about it?

Do you use muti-grade or?

Begining with an overhaul in 1991 (prop strike, prop shot, engine ok), my O-470-L had Aeroshell 100 single weight to break in and Aeroshell 15-50 until two years ago. Did about 800 hrs of flying on that overhaul and every annual inspection the compression checks were always great. We swapped that engine out because of number of years but when we did I never had to add a quart between changes. Flew from here to Palm Springs CA in the mid 90's and we changed oil to 100 Aeroshell down there because of the 118 degree temps.

The 'new' engine is an IO-470-K (thirty more ponny's) and in the last two years based upon my my mechanics advice, I use Phillips 15-50 synthetic? blue bottles. so far so good.

Phillips XC 20-50 is NOT synthetic or semi-synthetic. That's what I use, too. I also add Camguard.

Thanks Fish & Pid,

I'll run that by AP/AI I use.

How abt additives? Do you use TCP or Camgaurd or Marvel Mystery Oil regularly? I read not to add TCP in an engine half way thru it's TBO hrs.

I run Aero Shell 15-50 here in Ak year round not much flying in the winter anymore. this eng is a IO470 N 550 SFR dont add between oil changes (25 hrs) In my last eng ( C225E) pre 470 eng I ran 100 . Is this 470K a three or four ring piston? "IMO" 3 ring pistons like thicker oil
In this moderen IO470N with 4ring pistons oil really does not mater as to weight/brand FYI a IO470N is a 260hp continous 2550 rpm used in

OOP's Mr. PID thanks for setting me stright on the facts about Phillips ( hangar is about 13 mi away at Birchwood That is where all my stuff is ) .... a lot goes into making a happy engine, we added a Champion oil filter on the new engine, no more screen, I want to add a six cylinder EGT to see if I have even fuel distribution. On inspection all plugs seem to be light brown. I am always lazy about start up and taxi, but when at cruise I run between 65% and 75% power. I think coming out of a Hangar at 60 degrees is an advantage. When I land I am again lazy getting back to the hangar letting the engine oil circulate while the engine dissapates heat. I think the best engine I ever had was the 0-320 E2D Lycoming in a Cessna c-172, before the C-180, it had 2700 hrs on it when we overhaulled it, there were really no problems with the engine, went to crome cylinders and steel rings, it took a while to break in but after that no problems what so ever.

aa,

When you said "IO 470 N 550 SFR", What does the "550" and the "SFR" mean?

How do i tell if the engine has 3 or 4 rings? It was zero-timed by TCM Gold Medallion Engine om 2/01/95. Engine model is 0470K27B with Serial No. 049467-R if that helps.

Its probably "550 hrs Since Factory Reman............."

I bet you will get as many answers on this as there are types of oil.
I'd suggest talking to one of the engine shops.

IMO....... w80 or w100 in the summer and 65 in the winter. Proven. I've heard good about the phillips though.

Thanks AK. :topjob:

After listening to Mike Busch's "All About Oil" webinar, I'm gonna use the W80 or W100 like you suggest along with Camguard. Prob add some MMO to the fuel for the bladders.

Here's the link to the recording. Enjoy..
