Newbie Question?

So i tied up some prince nymphs a week ago, and then took them down to the river. After a few casts they seemed to come apart the only thing i can think of is that i either did not wrap the thread tight enough, or did not whip finish enough cause i was worried about building up to much of a collar. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

i would start with the tightness of thread, i typically tie just tight enough not to break the thread and when i whip finish i do it 8-9 times and add a hefty amount of cement to the collar. by doing that ive nticed that they would last quite a few fish. used one fly 2 weeks ago that stood up to 5 fish landed and 3 other takes before the hook came out. tht fly still looks great and is still in my box.

Thanks i will have to try that, i was hesitant to use cement the first time i tied them, because i did not want it to affect the schlapen.(not sure i spelled that right)

as long as you keep it on the thread you should be fine use a tooth pick or something with a sharp point so you have control of the cement.

thanks 900 after responding to your earlier post i tried it and was just coming back on to let you know that i was successful, and that it was not nearly as hard as i thought it would be. Thanks

Cement definitely helps, but it's not the complete solution... A lot of guys don't use cement and don't have flies that come apart mid-cast.

After you tie a fly up, try twisting the material on the hook. Does it twist easily? If so, you aren't tying it tight enough...

Like 900 said, tie just tight enough that your thread doesn't break... Also, keep constant tension on your bobbin so that what you have already tied doesn't come unwound... If you are having a hard time with that, throw a few half hitches in every now and then to secure things.
