I add a new tool for me and now after this trip wouldn’t leave home without it. You may have seen it on the “ALONE’ program but I bought the Silky Katana 500 and it was great!! Weight vs ability vs benefit and uses it is hard to beat

I have the Big Boy in my trail ‘rescue box’- it cuts really well. Remarkable tools. I hope you enjoy the Katana.

Where did you pick this up from? Looks like something I might need to carry in my airplane.

Brian- if you want to learn more about them, Silky Saws Australia has some great videos comparing the saws as well as the different blade teeth. There are other videos out there of course. There are different sizes of the Katanaboy from 500mm to 1000mm. I chose the Bigboy as it has a pretty big blade (14.5”), has a nice fitted sheath, and folds small enough to fit in a pack or snowmachine bag. I also like the bright yellow handle. Sometimes a handsaw is faster than getting a chainsaw out and started and these cut very smoothly (pulling only). Their smaller saws are awesome as well. I will leave the OP to state where he purchased his Katanaboy.

I've got the smaller version (BigBoy) and love it! Best folding saw I've ever used. Have thought about the Katana, but just unsure how much I would really use one that large...

It's interesting that they would call it a Katana, as a real Katana is a Japanese sword not a saw. Maybe because it kinda looks like one? I bet they are nice and handy though.

Did you or others on here happen to use any of these silly saws to cut bone. Was thinking about trying one with finer teeth as a bone saw.

i have a smaller one that i have used to cut through bone with. It has the bigger teeth for wood. It got the job done but something with finer teeth would have been a little cleaner.

I would imagine that the name Katanaboy is very likely a marketing gimmick name as it sounds ‘cooler’ than saying it is a two-handed long folding saw. They also sell ‘Outback’ models of saws that seem to be good sellers. I know that I would prefer the Katanaboy saw over one of my Katana’s for cutting limbs/trees. Really nice products. I like that you can get different blades with more/less aggressiveness to be more appropriate for what you are cutting.

You can buy a Silky saw with a blade you want, or buy an additional that fits quickly. The models have color coding according to the blade they come with, but as long as it is for the same saw, the different blades will fit. There are some with slight curve as well as some flatter. Very versatile. Having one able to cut some kindling or clear an area and then swapping to a fine tooth for bone is a handy option.

I just ordered it from amazon and have the 500. THe middle size one. We ended up using several times and worked incredible. We did use it on the bone of moose legs because it was handy at the time and worked but with the large teeth took some effort but trees, no matter the size cut like butter. I would say it’s now a must have for any camp. Fly, float, boat etc. Brian - would be great for the plane
