New rod from St Croix (Bank Robber)...

Ran across this brand new rod from St Croix today and ordered a 7 wt. Most stores don't have the rod in stock yet, but Fish USA has them in stock and also sells them through Amazon. Makes a nice birthday gift from the wife. Designed for streamer fishing, looks like a rod that could prove quite useful for various applications in Alaska. I will be using this rod in SE for steelhead in April. I just need to decide what color intruder to tie on the end of it. Looks like a rod that would be equally happy with an egg sucking leech or dolly llama attached on the end of a type III/IV sink tip. Being handmade in Wisconsin and having a lifetime warranty made this an easy purchase. Also, my St Croix Legend Ultra 6 wt is among my favorite fly rods. Curious to see how the "Bank Robber" compares.

You're killing me, Dan. I love my 8 wt St. Croix and have had excellent service from them in the past when I needed warranty service done. I'm trying to save some money these days...but man, I really want a 4 weight for grayling and small stream dollies. If my credit card bill is higher soon, I'll have my wife talk to you.

Funny thing happened. We are walking around World Wide Angler a few hours ago. I buy her a Kingpin centerpin reel and I am lusting over this Scott rod. It is $725 and the wife gives me "the look" so I swiftly and autonomously decide I really don't need the rod after all. It then hits her that tomorrow is my B'day. She is overridden with guilt being that I just dropped $400 on a reel for her and my B'day is tomorrow. She changed her tune quickly and tells me to buy whatever I want. Hot dang. So here I is, proud owner of a Bank Robber.

The BankRobber is a pretty sweet twig. Floyd Dean and I spent an hour with Kelly's personal 7wt at the SAC ISE show, we were both trying to throw a tailing loop (intentionally) with it, but we couldn't without some arm motions grossly inappropriate to flycasting. We were just throwing yarnies and a SA WF7 line with it, but the reserve power was more than enough to hit the backing knot anytime you felt like letting one rip.

Besides being a powerful twig, it is a pretty accurate one too. Floyd and I both do the "Best of the West" accuracy competitions (in addition to Floyd being an AWESOME trick caster, look him up), and although we couldn't compete with the 7wt, we ran the course anyway and were pretty **** impressed with the soft touch of the rod - if you know how to make it go where you want it to, it will, with amazing regularity for a "competitively priced" 7wt.

Kelly knocked it out of the park with this one. It is a great rod for throwing heavy junk accurately all day.

He's also been working with Scientific Anglers to develop streamer lines that match his new Bank Robber rod... in case you're looking for a new line. Though, bear in mind, if you buy a Kelly Galloup rod and line... it doesnt mean you're ever gonna fish like the man. That dude is an animal!

For anyone interested in the rod, looks like they will be hard to come by. I ordered mine from Fish USA (via Amazon) yesterday as it appeared to be in stock. They emailed me today and said it would be mid April and then noted such on their website. I called St Croix and got production runs/times and Cabelas is getting an order next week. I cancelled my order from Fish USA and ordered one from Cabelas instead. The guy at St Croix said all production runs through June/July are already sold out. Looks like the quickest way to get one will be with Cabelas, who currently has a 1-2 week back order status.

Someday I dream to just carry your tackle box G. Just reading your ditty on flyrods gave me the warm fuzzys. I'm planning a late December Hoh trip w/ my Skagit Valley buddys I hope I run into you. Hey would the "Bankrobber" 8 wt be appropriate for olympic pen steel?

I don't think St. Croix is planning on putting out an 8wt it that model.

If you are single-handing indicators and such, you should look into a switch rod if you don't already have one. Kick-ass line control, extra distance in rollcasting, and the backbone to battle big wild OP steel.

I won't be on the Hoh again until 2012, late Feb. That is a beautiful flow, one that I always have a good time on.
