I was digging around in a big storage can that I put some stuff of my Dad's in. Found 3 500 round bricks of .22 Longs. What a find as I now have a new gun to shoot them in. When my wife told me to go hang yard sale signs today I noticed Brown Bear Gun Store and Museum had a sale sign up, in I go. I used to have the old wood stocked over and under Savage .22/20 ga. and sold it about 40 years ago. I now have a Savage .22/.410 with a synthetic stock that is a whole lot lighter. I will sight the .22 barrel in for those .22 Longs I found today and recruit the grankids to help me shoot those 1,500 rounds up. One of my beautiful daughters found me an original Trapper Nelson Pack Board for my birthday, so now I am set for any grouse that walks the face of this earth!

That sounds like the way things go around my house. She sends you out to hang signs and you come home with a rifle. She should have known better than to let you out of her sight for a few minutes.

You sure those longs are enough medicine for a grouse??????????? 
The longs should work as shorts do and the old pellet gun has been taking them for years around the house. Besides, I only shoot them in the eye. LOL But just in case one is super tough or charges I can blast them with a 2.5 inch No. 7 load from the .410 barrel. A man has to be prepared!
I have an old beat up wood stocked 24 in .22/410, it's become my favorite gun! Last year I stumbled on a squirrel at about 10 yards so I thought to myself ok switch barrels, apparently the thought never reached my finger! Shot the little guy with the .410 barrel, wasn't as bad as I expected but still a bit much at 10 yards!

I have one of the Savage 22/410s that has become my favorite grouse guns. Several years back one of the box stores was closing (Pay Lees or K Mart?) ,can't remember which, and they were closing out everything dropping prices 10% every so often. I picked up 6 bricks of Rem Hi Speed 22shorts at $12 per brick. They are very effective on grouse and very quiet from the long barrel. Also I use 444Marlin cases to make brass cases for the 410. Using 3/4 oz of #9 shot, it is quite effective to 30yds or so.
Really? Brass .410 out of 444? You're shooting that out of a 22/410 over under? Sounds kinda cool.
Btw, cool find 338 mag. My dad used to have an old Trapper Nelson, not sure what happened to it though.
It's real easy. You reprime the case and pour in a charge of H110. Then put in a 44mag gas check cup down and then a thin over shot wad. Next put in 3/4 oz of #9 shot and another over shot wad. Then a little silicone to seal the last over shot wad in place and it's ready to go. Although you usually don't need to, if my memory serves, you can resize the cases using a 45acp sizer die with the innards out. I picked a powder charge from a very old Speer reloading manual for a 3/4oz load. I really bugs me to pay $15 a box for 410 shells when 12ga are only $6/7 per box. Anyway they work pretty good and are quite cheap to load. I have two 410s One is the 22/410 Savage and the other is a single shot Savage 220 and I use the brass shells in both. I got into reloading because it was much cheaper to shoot and I just haven't got over the cheap part.

I made mine like that for a long time rbuck351. I have a Ithaca Super Single 410 lever action coming my way soon so I may have to see if I can find some 444 brass. I killed a lot of rooster pheasants when I was a kid with a single shot 410 made by Luthe Hardware Company Des Moines Iowa. It only shot the 2 1/2 inchers but the pheasants were oblivious to the peep squeak load as they died regardless.
