For those of us living in Fairbanks (and other distant lands), can you be slightly more descriptive? I mean it looks cool and all, but I can't exactly swing by Barneys on my lunch break....

Dang man!! You're gettin an early start. You've already got your gear staged at the airplane :D

Hey, did you draw anything sheep? I haven't read the draw threads.

LOL..... Yep, an early start for me to get "Shanked by the Weather Again" !!!!
I put in for sheep, but didn't get drawn.......I just got a measely Archery Moose tag ( DM424) for Ft Rich, might get really lucky and find me a spike fork in there hopefully.
As far as sheep......me and the other 300-plus sheephunters are meetin' up in the Brooks.....are you in, I didn't see your name on the list yet?

Wow !....that is light. I take it the Model no. represents the size in Cubic in? The new barneys Hunter pack I have (pictured) is 6800 Cu In. They do also have the Pinnacle pack in that new material.

Steve:

I hope you'll share a full report on that pack after your trip. I'm really interested if it can stand up to our brushy SE terrain.

King, it is made with the same stuff they make their tarps from. I own one of their tarps and have been amazed at the abuse that thing has taken. The pack uses 2 layers of the same material, I had to try a pack under 3lbs.

I will post a report on it after I get back.

Oh and don't worry K, I'm heading in on the 6th so I will save one for ya. :)

It is 5200ci, I also got the E&E to attach to the back which add 9.5 ozs. That will give me 6200ci, which should get it done and still be under 4lbs.

Good deal on the moose. I'll be in the sheep mtns somewhere Lord willing. Not sure where yet. I'd sure like to get back in the Brooks. We'll see.

I am seriously thinking about picking up the Kifaru ultralight for the wife. All she needs is the base pack since she will never carry more than it can hold. I doubt that she will ever haul more than about 45to MAYBE 50lbs so dropping 4 pounds off her pack weight is actually taking 4 lbs off of my back!

Hey now, no copying my ideas. :D My wife will rarely pack more than 65 pounds (especially this year with only being post 10 months from a leg break by the sheep opener) on the way out so I bought her the Kifaru pack for our anniversary. I will be rocking the Barney's pack frame with 8100 cu in of pack space. Once we get spike camp setup I will use the Kifaru UL and she will be carrying a UL 2 lb pack. So when we get a sheep down I will be packing it back to spike camp in the Kifaru and she will be packing the 30-40 pounds of day hunt/overnight bivy gear back to camp in the UL 4400 cu in 2 lb pack. We'll see how it goes a little R&D happening this summer hopefully with these setups will fine tune it if its a terrible or awesome idea. :D

Figure if I am going to be lugging the weight I might as well get the hauler and save two pounds over the Mystery Ranch pack by going to a Barney's with nearly 2000 cu in more space to boot!!! Best of all I look like a hero taking 6 pounds off her back by swapping packs for her to hunt with by getting this as an anniversary present (if it gets here in time that is....Kifaru has it arrive 4 days prior to our anniversary so we shall see). When we leave for spike camp we will have 13 pounds less just leaving camp between our new packs. Pretty good weight savings there for sure. Saving 13 pounds for $550 is cheap by sheep hunting standards!!! :D

Kaha,

That new pack looks sweet, if my hodge podge pack setup turns out to suck I will be going that route for sure. But so far so good.
