Nallo 3 gt vs Golite Shangra-la 5

I have owned both of these exact tents and still own the GoLite as it fits my needs and I like the layout of the tent a little better. I personally don't think the tunnel design is THAT great IMO. I bent a couple poles in the Nallo GT 3 as the wind shifted in the middle of the night one late September outing in the Kenai Mnts. Hilleberg makes great stuff however you could get the GoLite SL5 currently for half the price of a Nallo GT 3 (40% off GoLite.com with free shipping through the end of the year), but if you are wanting a double wall tent then the Hilleberg would be the way to go as GoLite only gives you the option of inner nests that are bug netting with a floor not a nylon inner tent if that matters. Both tents are non-freestanding so that doesn't really come into play.
Both are great tents and can't go wrong really. I just like the GoLite for the much higher space to weight ratio as it weighs half as much with twice as much space and I can stand up in the center of it.

All this probably did nothing but muddy the waters for ya, but I hope it atleast helped a little.

Thanks man for the information, I guess I have a question regarding the nest. Did you find a smaller net that fits? It would be nice to put in a smaller nest instead of the Shangra la 5 nest. Do you have much problem with bugs without the nest?

Yes sir,
I have the full SL5 nest for when 3 or 4 of us go on a backcountry hiking trip in the summer when bugs are expected.
However I also just use this bug nest that is enclosed with a waterproof floor:

This setup works well when its just my wife and I going as 30 sq ft (normal sq ft of a 2 person tent) is used for the sleeping area that is bug proof with a real floor. While 60 sq ft is covered vestibule area that is out of the wind and rain that you can sort gear, swap clothes, cook and what not all out of the rain while even still being able to stand up in the center next to the pole if you are sub 6'2" anyway.
Also as shown in the interior pic of the SL5 if you use your black diamond trekking poles in such a manner together they can create the center pole for the SL5 that can be adjusted to any height depending on conditions. This saves you 13 oz in tent weight if you already use BD trekking poles when out hiking/hunting.
Here is another couple pics of the interior of the SL5 with the little bug net showing how much space you have inside the tent without even being onto your sleeping bags which is nice when you come back to your tent bloody and soaking wet in the dark:

My brother and I have both of these tents. Mine is the SL4, which I believe is the same as the SL5. We have used both on sheep hunts here in BC and they are both great. If you are in colder weather, the hilleberg will be less drafty and hold more heat. If you dont find a large enough flat spot for the SL it is tough to get a tight pitch and you will be left with big drafty spaces. The hilleberg sags badly with snow and I dont consider it well suited for snow. The SL has a big footprint but like all tipi's it's not all useable because of the walls. I sewed a titanium goat stove jack into the SL and use the titanium goat cylinder stove and this is a really nice modification. With tent and stove it is still lighter than the hilleberg(less than 5lbs). With the SL you have to deal with condesation on the walls especially if you get it tight to the ground. I am planning on sewing on a 10" strip of syl nylon along the bottom edge of the SL so I can seal up the drafts if I want or tie it up if I want. With this mod and the stove it will still be lighter than the hilleberg.I havent had to use a bug net yet. The biggest problem we have found with the SL is finding a big enough spot to get a good pitch. If it is loose the wind will be a problem. One of our patners calls it the condo. I dont know if this will help or confuse. Good luck.

thanks for the info about the tent there i was looking for a new tent that i could use for sleeping in the backcountry and be able to stand up right inside the tent ..
i like the idea about useing the treking poles to act as a pole inside the tent great idea on the way to save some weight when out camping ..
when the whole package is put togerther how much does it wieght in total and how big of stuff sack does it take ..
