MRP - Wins The Day In A Five Shot Group

I went to the range to put my load work for my Savage 116FHSS 300Win Mag to a final test by shooting five shot groups. I adjusted the OAL from 3.340" to 3.3195" The bullet used is a 180gr TTSX. The brass is Winchester brass with CCI250 primers. There were three powders that produced the best three shot groups and highest velocities out of 7 powders tested last week. The three powders tested today shooting five shot groups were RL-22, W-760 and MRP. MRP was by far the best performer in a five shot test as the target indicates below and the velocities were exceptional for a 300Win Mag with this level of accuracy.

Those Savages sure put some high dollar guns to shame - I am thinking a 223 would be nice for me to play with - I like the Detachable clips and may have to order up one....

Nice shooting BT! I've been hearing a lot of good things about those Savages. Have you heard about nitriding yet? Supposed to get you 2-4 times the barrel life and 1-3% more velocity. Could be something to consider for a 6.5-300 Wthby roud:

Good group and great shooting but have to ask how you measured the group size. If the grid size is 1" and the bullets are .30 cal then the center to center of the widest 2 shots look larger than a bullet diameter. Note that 2 shots just touching at the edges would have a c-c group of .300"

In any event it is great to see any inexpensive magnum rifle shoot very well. Thanks for sharing your experience - I've got a couple of .300 Mags I need to work up loads for this spring.

So how much of a jump for the TTSX worked the best? I see you OAL, but don't know the other specifics with your rifle to know the jump.

I first tried 3.340" then I decided to move the TTSX down to 3.3195" just to see if that big of a jump would make a difference like it had in other rifles I have own when giving the TSX a much great jump than Barnes originally suggested and it worked even better than I thought it would.

Until my MRP comes in, I went a head and bit the bullet and ordered two pounds of Ramshot Magnum. reasons, 1. It is a double based spherical powder that is coated so it is not temp sensitive and should give not only 15 - 20% longer barrel life than extruded powders, but since it is not temp sensitive it will not have as much Dev as other spherical powders do - therefore being consistent in accuracy like extruded powders. 2. It is at the top of the velocity chart with Quick Load program for a 180gr TSX. 3. It is a very clean burning powder. 4. It will be easier to use as a compressed load than extruded powder. I sure hope it is as accurate as some say it is. One thing for sure I will find out pretty soon.

Beartooth, I need to ask my question again because your last response didn't have quite what I was trying to figure out.

I understand you increased your jump by 20.5 thousandths when you shortened your round from the original 3.400, but I don't know how far the bullet was jumping to your rifling when it was at the 3.4 length. Sorry to be a bother, but I like to hear the TSX and TTSX experiences of others becuase I think these bullets are some of the best out there......but they do require some special loading some times to get the desired accuracy out of them, which you've done with this load. Thanks.

I don't know how far they are having to jump to reach the lands. I just started where Barnes said start which was 3.340" and I know from experience of loading so many TSX's over the last five years in my 22-250, 223, 257wby, 30-06, 375Wby, 257-300Wby, 300Wby, 7mmSTW, 7mm Rem mag, 358Win, 35 Whelen, 340Wby and 416Wby that I needed more jump than Barnes recommended and in every rifle I mentioned above needed more jump. When I did give them about the same jump below what Barnes recommended as I did my 300Win, I would always get outstanding accuracy. I have never measure to the lands.

IMR4350 is my Accurate load for my 165gr load but did not reach the velocities or have the accuracy I needed or expected with the 180gr load. I also tried H4350 and it was even slower and the accuracy was not what I needed.
