I really don't have any advice for you as I am new to 'mooching', but from my experience, I think the flashers may prove to be more of a hinderance than help (ie. tangling with your line, etc.) Let me know what you find. It may be just the ticket to entice a strike!

Alright, can someone define "mooching" for me? I've heard multiple definitions, most ranging somewhere between trolling and jigging. Since authors present it in a different light, I never really know what they're talking about in articles such as those in Fish Alaska magazine (and on here, for that matter.) Probably a silly question, but...

Mooching is nothing more than hanging a line over the side and allowing the current, if there is any, to provide the bait action. Most people use a cut plug herring and a 3-6 oz banana weight. It can either be done on anchor or on drift, current or lack of one will dictate. In the narrows the water movement due to tide action dictates an on anchor set up, in the open water where the current is not as severe, drifting is a good option. I have used flashers when on anchor and a good tide movement, then removed the flasher when the current slowed. A smaller "dodger"type flasher is o.k when drifting as well. Remember, the flasher/dodger is there to attract and simulate the flash of a fish....it would only be a problem if there is a lot of up and down wave action or if attempting to "jig". True mooching is what some call "lazy man's fishing"...just stick the rod in the rod holder and take a nap until you hear the drag singing....I like it!

I take offense to this as I feel I'm not a lazy person, but I love mooching for salmon. I prefer to call it "drinking man's fishing"...just stick the rod in the holder, drink cold beer until you hear the drag singing...

I believe they were motor mooching, which is really trolling very slowly. Where mooching for salmon involves slowly lowering the bait down and working it back to the boat. Oh you can catch them by sticking the rod inthe rod holder and drinking beer too but nearly as well as keeping the bait constantly mooving through the water.
I agree that flashers tend to interfere more than help when directly attached to the line. Especially with Kings as they tend to take long , hard runs and the flasher can help to work the hook loose.
When we troll, we run the flasher from the downrigger ball so that it is about 6 feet in front of the bait.

When mooching for kings, how deep do you fish? I am assuming you go deep like trolling but not quite to the bottom so you don't get into halibut or rockfish? Or, is it a fish finder thing and target whatever you see going by?

My understanding of 'mooching' is that instead of 'trolling' horizontally covering a large amount of water at certain depth(s), you are 'trolling' vertically through a water column; meaning, you put your bait in the water, slowly lowering the bait down through the water column (until you reach your desired depth), either let it sit there for a few seconds or jig it slowly for a few seconds, then slowly reel in 10 or so feet of line and repeat until you have retrieved all of the line you set out (or until you get a fish). To me, this is mooching.
