I figure you get a lot more hours of darkness in the winter than we do, so I figured you'd be the ones to ask

Actually, we in Alaska have no shooting time restraints but the use of artificial light products are illegal for use to hunt with.

It would be illegal to use for big game (use of artificial light is illegal), but I believe it would be legal for some predator hunting/trapping.

I believe you can use artificial light and shoot game in certain units with a trappers license. Read the exceptions in this quote from the trapping regs:

MAY NOT:
take furbearers with the aid of a pit, fire, light (other than sunlight or moonlight), electronically enhanced night vision scope, radio communications, cellular or satellite telephones, artificial salt lick, explosives, expanding gas arrow, bomb, smoke, chemical (excluding scent lures), or a conventional steel trap with an inside jaw spread over 9 inches. Exceptions: Killer-style trap with a jaw spread of less than 13 inches may be used and artificial light may be used for the purpose of taking furbearers Nov. 1- Mar. 31 in Units 7 and 9-26 during an open season;

Even if you can't use it to hunt with I bet it would be a lot of fun if you has some place to use it. Night vision devices have come a long way in the past 10 years. Thanks for the link...it was fun reading about it.

You can use artificial light to hunt furbearers under a trapping license, but I think night vision is out.

Still be a handy instrument to have.

If I am not mistaken it is legal to hunt predators like coyotes at night in California.

Night vision is great for identifying things that go bump in the night. I would catigorize it more as self defense than hunting.
