I was hunting cottonwood last week and heard people calling ducks. I've only just jumped ducks and played the sit and be still game with ducks their. Do people have success with duck calls here or even use decoys .just never heard it before..... good luck everyone

No.. Ducks are not vocal. Duck calls are to communicate in a special language with other hunters across the marsh. There are 8 notes you will need to become familiar with in order to effectively communicate your messages. There are also many other different types of calls that represent another special language. They are labeled as Pintail, teal, widgeon and possibly the diver call. Each has it's own special note and tone.

You're kidding right? Do duck calls and decoys work...... uh yeah. I have turned ducks multiple times that were headed to other ponds using a set of 12-18 dec's a mojo with a remote and an assortment duck calls. You need some movement and something that will entice them to drop. Hence why decoys and duck calls are used.

I have a beavertail drag boat i use to haul my gear out to cottonwood anytime i go out. thing works great i can carry 2x as much decoys with it and none of the weight and bulkiness on my back.

Thats because you have to walk about 3-4 miles out there to get a good shoot. Most everyone leaves thier decoys out there stashed in a strategic location. makes sense.

I had a bag stashed out there that year they banned ATV's. I used to cover it up to make it look like a muskrat hut. It stayed pretty well hidden. I wouldn't have minded if somebody else used them as long as they left them there, but can't trust anybody to do that anymore. Honestly the only other person I ever saw hike out as far as I did was AK_Marine, and he's a hunting buddy anyway so I told him he could use them whenever he wanted. I cut the straps off the decoy bag, so if somebody hauled them out, they would have really earned them. Now that ATV's are allowed again, I wouldn't leave them out. I used to just strap them down to the quad and ride out to the area the pond I hunted was, park, then carry my decoys in so I didn't leave a trail to my hunting spot.

Is this a positive way to support and encourage others who want to get better at hunting waterfowl? Does this reflect AWA and their views on promoting the sport? Is this forum just a way to belittle someone who doesn't have the same knowledge you do?

No...this reflects the humor of waterfowlers..
I would like to assure you there was no "belittling" going on..It's apparent the original poster took no offense and surely shares the sport along with a little humor.

AWA is a great organization dedicated to Alaska's waterfowl and wetlands, dedicated to promoting the waterfowling traditions and heritage. We have done more(some would not agree) to promote the waterfowling sport across Alaska and the immediate area. AWA has introduced many new waterfowlers to the sport and will continue to every year.

Becoming a member and attending the membership meetings is a great way to network and meet others that share your same waterfowling interest.

Next meeting is Sept 21 at Pizza Man in Eagle River at 7:30. See you there.

Point understood. I do believe you had no ill intentions. I also believe that we all have a responsibility to help someone that's new and is smart enough to ask questions in a forum where the collective knowledge is so great. We all need to remember that while being clever and humorous are great attributes they can also build walls where especially newcomers do not want to ask questions for fear of being the butt of a joke. Humor and condescension are a fine line. I just hope that any other new people that read this understand how committed you and AWA are to helping them. Oh by the way I did find your comments to be very clever. Also I already am a member of AWA
