Can anyone tell me if there are any privately owned campgrounds in AK that are not just parking lots? I was hoping to find one that has private, wooded sites, and hook-ups would be nice (but I can live without them). Thanks!

Go and buy a Milepost, most of the campgrounds are listed, lots of ads and descriptions.

Though the Milepost might have numerous listings, when we first bought our RV I found a book at Waldenbooks that tops any others I could find. It's called "Traveler's Guide to Alaskan Camping: Alaska & Yukon Camping with RV or Tent. It looks like they've created a 5th edition so there should be a lot of updated info in it. Below is the link.
I now give them as "RV Warming" gifts. It lists whether there are hook ups/dump stations/prices etc. Mine has so many notes & sticky tabs in it that friends want to borrow it to copy the notes.

I could rent you exclusive rights to say ten acres in the heart of the "Chugach National Forest" with two pure water creeks, and two waterfalls. What do you want to pay per month...? Staggering views of Turnagain Arm, I could even chase some Grizzly Bears through your yard every night.

When I read this all I could see was that scene from Jeremiah Johnson where the old trapper led the angry griz into the cabin where Johnson was. "Here ya go pilgrim!"

We have so many bears. My neighbor will fire a few shots, then call me on the phone and say, "Blond Griz coming up your driveway". I'll watch it interact with the geese for a while then run it down the powerline, and call the chicken lady. "Griz coming be there in two minutes". We have more Brown Bears than Black Bears. And one monster Brown Bear.

The Milepost is a good idea.

The Good Sam club has a "Find a Campground" feature on their website at: http://www.goodsamclub.com/.
For the most selective filter, check the "Good Sam only", but for some towns, pickins might be sparse.

Fodors (www.fodors.com) has user forums, which can be helpful for some destinations. You'll have to join to post, but not to search.

Good luck.
