Looking for a Sled dog team.

Hello, I am looking for a small sled dog team. I only want 3 dogs to start with as I am learning how to mush. I am looking for a few good dogs to learn with. I am interested in buying or leasing the dogs for this season. I don't care how old they are, as long as they are in good health and have exp. in mushing. I am also looking for a small sled and all rigging for the dogs. So if you have the dogs, sled or just know where I can find them, pleae help. Thanks for the help.

Just a thought, but have you looked into picking up a dog or two from any of the shelters. I know there are lots of good sleddogs that get turned into the local animal shelter here in fairbanks. There are a few volunteers that go there every week and take a few of them out and hook them up to a sled to gauge their abilities. They then report back on their potential.

i put together a great 8-dog team with shelter dogs. we never had speed, but we had fun...we used to do 20-30 miles 2 or 3 times a week.
they are all old now, and i can get 3-5 in team now for a couple mile loop...if we ever get any snow this winter!
my boy mushes a couple on his sprint sled...

Thank you Frenchy and Homerdave. No I have not checked out the shelter yet. I did not know they tried the dogs out and rated them. I was afraid they would just say they were sled dogs to find them a home, and then when I got them home they would be just pets. I will look into the shelter. But what about a lead dog? As I am just learning, I don't want to have to train a lead dog myself. That would cause more harm than good I think. Any ideas as to this problem? Do you know of a lead dog that needs a good home?

another vote for the 2nd chance league...they'll help find you dogs you can manage and have fun with, including helping you with a good leader.


is there anybody in Delta who you can mentor with? The collins sisters have a good book out on the how-to of mushing, and the Sierra Nevada dog mushers do too.
