Anyone hear about the wingnut that says he's going to Latouche Island and stay for one year without any provisions? I read about it somewhere but barely remember any details.

It made the news about a month ago. LaTouche is not that big of an island and there are some really nice cabins/houses on the West side if he did get in a bind. Not to mention Port Ashton is just across the bay and the ferry passes by on a regular schedule. He's not exactly going into the wild by any means. He claimed no contact from the outside world for a year but what would he do if someone started up a conversation with him....just ignore them and stand there quietly?
There are plenty of deer hunters down that way in the fall not to mention the commercial fishing guys have a few cabins just off the beach with a runway.
Wonder if he's down there now?

another "Mountain Man" lol.

I'm sorry guys but these reality shows are getting to be just to much.

Was watching the Mountain Man show last night and they showed the man from Alaska taking off to check his trapline and at the first trap he had a rifle slung over his back, but when he got to like the third trap the wolfs were howling , his machine was broke down, and he was without a gun.

I know some people would like to see some extra money, but ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I guess thats just not me.

Carry on. ( but at least edit the film before airing it )

Ive seen a few come and go. Most cant hack new country alone. some are just weirdos and keep on moving.

We actually had a woman and her kids live in one of our 'Lower' camps near the rivers mouth this winter and had a kid there, solo "but" She's Wicked mean, unthankfull, sullen and demanding, we cant stand to socialize with her, though her kids are cool.

Thankfully, she moved back to Kiana just in time for the camp to be used by us, as the Whitefish are running and were waiting a storm and the ice on the Sound and lake to go, thats a great Spring camp

Even the locals here claim "To be alone is to die", and while hunting excurtions were often a solo venrture, they still had a cousin on the next rivers bend

LaTouche is a pretty civilized Island, as another poster pointed out. The guy referenced in the thread title received a bit of press for something that's already been done (more or less), and on a lot tougher Islands, much further out... by folks who weren't media-hungry.

A friend of mine spends a fair bit of time out there with a boat he built, a flat-bottom, putting it into bays and coves at high tide to sit on the bottom when the tide goes out, and beach-combs hither and thither.

The longest he's been out there at a time is 8 mos. On that that trip he had several months that he saw no one, if I recall correctly. He catalogues his trips on DVD.

Lots of venison out that way on some of the Islands, though this last winter was hard on them; snow depth and cold weather.

With a skiff and some knowledge, there's good rock fish to be had in some places, as well as dolly varden, clams, shrimp, etc.

Terribly hard life when done like that, eh? ;^>)
