Lots of information from both sides, and long but interesting reading.

It takes a while for policy to feel the knee jerk response to critical management decisions. Lets hope they wake up before our wild salmon pops decline to a past tense scenario.

What would the real economic lost be if they just shutdown the pink hatcheries for 5 or 10 years? Certainly there would be less fish, but the price would also rise with the lesser supply. Cost of running the hatcheries would also be saved - that has to be considered in the balances.

Is the risk worth the rewards? For most of us Alaskans I would think not - few want the dang pinks, although that may come down to all that is left.

And of course the tax money paid by commercial fishing to help all Alaskans is pretty insignificant - I do need to check the latest figures, but I doubt if it has changed much.

Since there are around 240 seiners that just seine PWS that would be a factor. There is also at least 15+ tenders that work with the fleet that I see every year over here. Time Bandit, Saga, Northwestern and many others show up over here. Also, the fish processors would suffer, we have two in Valdez alone. The economy of places like Valdez and Cordova would also suffer.

I hear you but they had a pretty good run last year for pinks.

Last year the hardest part about silver fishing was keeping the jack kings off the rigs. I bet in one day we released at least 25.

How much is it worth to save the other salmon? Losses in PWS could certainly be off set by gains elsewhere.

When I see the all the furor over the Willow Project the pinks in PWS seems pretty insignificant to the economics of the state. I also don't recall any of the fishermen crying for us oil workers when the economy collapsed in 1985. I certainly hate to see anyone suffer economic hardships, but no one should feel that are immune because of this or that. The job market is hot - some may have to move to opportunities elsewhere as I've done quite a number of times myself.

Just shut the dang pink hatcheries down for 5 or 10 years and watch the other salmon recover.
