Late Silver Run?

I'm not looking for anyone to give up there favorite hole...

With that out of the way the wife and I are looking for a place to catch some late season Silvers. I thought I read that the Kenai got a late run that had fish into late September.

We are still catching them here in the valley but want to take a weekend to get away 4th week in Sept. Can anyone fill me in on late silvers? You can PM me if you want to keep it off the thread.

You would be pushing your luck fishing that late....Kenia might still have some silvers, if you decide to fish Kenia I would focus on rainbows. You may be able to find some silvers by Fairbanks or farther north. Could also try homer lagoon but again it's very hit and miss this late in the season. Just my 2 cents

Thanks, I could have sworn I read somewhere they got a late run but I guess not. We can certainly occupy our time with the fly rods, beads and bows. Any particular area that is good for bows?

I have never fished the Kenai River. I'm am not a crowds guy but I figured that late in the season all the crowds are gone.

Try and find a group of spawning fish and fish behind them, rainbows will sit right behind them. Now for crowds depends on weather there are quite a few hard core rainbow guys who fish all winter. If your willing to wait even longer your could go try and get steelhead but you would need to wait almost another month. Just my 2 cents

Thanks, we fish them up here all the time so we are good on the how to find them. Just thought someone might give up a general area to start. I think I read guys fish up high for bows on the Kenai. I have no idea were the silvers etc. end up spawning on the river. I assume up high.

Didn't know about the steelhead though. We are always looking for some time on the water so I'll see what I can find on steelhead on the Kenai by searching the posts here.

You'll have no problem filling your limits of silvers at that time of year on the Kenai. I caught big fat chromers well into October last year, and have done the same almost every fall though you may have to pick through some blushed fish to get them.

Great! I thought I read about guys catching them late. We had a good run up here this year. Saturday we were catching chrome up around talkeetna.

As a matter of fact you can catch silvers well into Feb on the Kenai. The last week of Sept/first week of Oct is a great time for silvers on the Kenai. If you have a boat it would make things a lot easier on you but, if not there are plenty of places to bank fish that will produce just as well. And the best part is once you fill your bag limit you can target bows!!!!!

Not sure what drainage your talking about steelheading, but one of the popular ones now closes end of September or October now, changed a few years back.

IMO the best time of year for fast action on big silvers is the last week of September through mid October. Last year October 16-17 me and three friends caught nearly 100 in 7 hours of fishing. You'll definitely have to sort through some fire engines but you can easily limit on bright bucks if you are picky. We like throwing wiggle worts with a sardine fillet

I was talking to the wife and looking at some of the river. I was considering paying a guide since it's our first time on the Kenai and we never fished it. We don't have time to learn the river in 2 days. Does anyone have suggestions as to who would be a good person to contact for a 1-2 day float trip that could put us on fish? It would be the weekend of the 19th or 26th. We don't need lodging just the float..We are not interested in killing our limit and getting off the water but want to spend a day or two on catch and release and taking a couple home.

Further south than you mentioned, but 10-20 fish days are pretty common well into Oct and Nov. Bright sea liced fish still coming in till late Oct.

I don't think you are going to have much luck finding a guide who is going to allow catch and release silver fishing... With a 90% Catch and Release mortality rate on silvers not many resource conscious guides will be doing that, and if they did they would be making enemies with about everyone on the river. Im sure you can find a guide who will let you catch and kill your limit of silvers then go trout fishing though.
