Why do you haul your boats all the way from Anchorage to Seward or Homer when Whittier is just 60 miles away? Whats the difference?
Landlubber question for ANC boat owners.

For me personally it's having a lot of amenities in Seward. The Mrs. typically doesn't go out on the boat with me so she and her girlfriends can cruise around the town while I'm out fishing and I can spend the evenings with her.I'm a day fisherman so out to the fishing grounds limit out and back at the Rec camp for the night. The price for launching and parking are a little cheaper and it's really nice to park the truck and trailer right next to the ramp. Don't get me wrong I do go to PWS but not as often as others here.

Whittier is more expensive to launch then you have a further ride in the boat to the better fishing holes. Seward is farther away, but cheaper to launch and not as far to the fishing holes.

A couple of reaons.
To run a boat out of Whittier, you have $20 for the tunnel, $20 to launch, and $10 per day to park, Seward is $10 to launch, and $5 to park, cost wise it's a tossup as the extra fuel you burn to get to seward pretty much equals the higher cost for whittier. Then you have the time factor. You'll end up showing up early to the tunnel for whittier, going through the tunnel is slow, launching out of whitter is slow, and the time it takes to drive to the parking lot and walk back is slow. All said and done, you'll get on the water the same time whether you are leaving out of Whittier or Seward. On the way back in, odds are you'll be waiting quite a while to get through the tunnel, rarely have our returns resulted in a 5-10 minute wait for the tunnel, more often 30-45 minutes. And then there are the unscheduled trains, that delay you another hour or more.
The biggest difference is you need to run far from Whittier to get into decent fishing, I've found I have to run at least 50 nautical miles out of Whittier to get into decent fishing, out of Seward, you can get into fish in 1/2 that distance. Seward is hot for silvers, Whittier the past several seasons has been not for silvers. Halibut is more hit than miss out of whittier, sewards much better for consistantly getting onto fish.
The way I look at it is Whittier is great for cruising for a long weekend, lots of great places to drop anchor and hike, and the shrimping cant be beat. But if I'm taking the boat out for a day to catch fish, Seward wins hands down.

PWS is very scenic, usually much calmer water and shrimp is a favorite past time of those who frequent the sound. Lots of great anchorage and bear hunting is fantastic. It is expensive though, as others have pointed out, but so is the extra hours drive to Seward, especially at these gas prices and how much my truck burns.

Seward is vastly superior to Whittier. You're just as close to Latouche and Montague from Seward as you are in Whittier. Seward all the way, whittier is loaded w/ cruise ship poop and its a blow hole. I can't think of a redeeming quality in Whittier to be honest, and I've been frequenting the place since the 60's. Haha alaskanmutt I know whatcha mean

How about the fact that if you have a larger boat the tunnel fee is $300.
If you end up staying a little late on the water, or get caugth past the last tunnel you're staying the night. At least Ican drive home from Seward anytime of the day or night.
The only good thing about Whittier is leaving it.

Sorry, I couldn't resist.
While Whittier is the most expensive place in south central, and its a zoo, and I feel they nickle and dime me to death, and its terribly unorganized.....it is where I go out of the most. I can pull out of here on a Friday after work and be on the water before its too late to find a place to anchor up for the night. Its hard to get down to Seward in time for that when I get off work late on Friday. I do love Seward though. They're both great places. But then again, any place with blue water and fishing is a great place in my book.

In all seriousness Seward by all measures has more and better fishing. Better king/silver/halibut. I do quite well fishing in PWS but I run at least 50 miles each time I go out. I do so because I catch fish out there and I like to run that far. My boat is an escape from every day life ~ meaning people everywhere I turn. The very last thing I want is to escape to a bunch of other boats. Where I fish I see maybe 1 -4 boats and usually nobody fishing right around me. That is Alaska, that is fishing, and that is what I like. Sure I could catch more fish with burning less diesel, but that's not why I escape to the water.
