A buddy of mine just got a boat and asked me about kicker steering.
I did not have a good answer for him so I thought I would try to get some help from you guys. Pictures would really help.
thanx

If your budget allows it...

you can opt for an extension for your tiller handle.

Yes tiller handle does work good. He was thinking of running something from the controls of his big motor to steer his kicker.

No problem

No problem

just rev up your kicker to the desired RPM, lock the motor in place and steer using your steering wheel with your main engine. Works like a champ. Forget all those widget gadgets. You don't need them. Your main engine works as your rudder to steer.

I just use the tiller handle. This allows me to fish off the very rear of the boat with my rod pointed straight off the back using my rod holder. I always get more action back there anyway and people just think I'm lucky, hee, hee, hee! :)

Kicker Steering

I have a 26 Osprey with 8hp Yamaha kicker that is a real pain to try to steer with an extension handle since the OB is mounted on the swim step. I finally parted with $400 for an ElectroSteer by Panther. I mounted it on an aluminum plate with two bolts through the swim step that I can remove easily when not trolling. Works great for me.

I have found that locking the kicker straight, and steering with the steering wheel does not work well with a jet. The boat does not want to steer at all, as their is now power to your jet. Kind of sucks, but steering the kicker with the tiller handle is about the only way on my boat. Wish there were a better solution...I may then actually use my kicker for trolling.

Tiller Handle Works Well. Using The Big Motor To Steer The Kicker Only Works In Fairly Calm Days.

Kicker steering

Kicker steering

I just mounted a 10hp kicker on my boat. Used a fulton motor mount and and auxillary steering kit. Got it all at Sprotsman's Warehouse for around $100 bucks. The steering rod attached to my 135hp main motor with one bolt and attached to the kicker with and adapter and a couple of bolts. I put a custom bend in the steering kit and it works great. The steering kit even has quick disconnects at each end so that when i need to remove the kicker i can do so without a wrench.
I went to the lake on Sunday to take her for a spin with the new setup and she worked like a champ....start the kicker, set the speed, kick back and relax....let the wife drive......yoooooohhhhoooooo!

Fish on!

Steering

I am looking a several different hookups between main motor and
kicker. I have found that on windy days, it is not enough to steer
using main motor due to not enough water passing outdrive to
steer against wind coming from abeam.

EZ Steer

EZ Steer

I've used an EZ Steer for 2 years, works great, low tech. Leave the stern-drive down when you use it. Also, make sure you have both units lined up before you start installing.
