bust?

bust?

thats what was said about the first run.
i have had some great days on the russian & kenai but nothing could compare to what i seen this year.
i was reading all the great forcast about the deshka this year,
did an eight day float there only caught 12 kings in eight days, where as in the past four or five years there i think my slowest day there was 4 kings.
and those years did'nt seem to have near as good as forecast.
ya just never know for sure till its all over.
i say go thinking like its gonna be the best run ever, and if it aint,
have a plan B
GOOD LUCK!!

No gloom and doom yet. Like everything else this year, they are probably running a bit late. When they hit the beach and finally commit to the river, the first "wall" of fish should make for some decent fishing.

Patience....

Best guess?

Best guess?

What's your best guess, doc — when will we see fishable numbers? This weekend?

Third week in July...is when you can expect fishable numbers of reds in the Kenai. Sure sometimes they show up early or late, but overall if you had to put all your eggs (or fish in this case) in one basket, that's when you'd want to be here.

Third week in July is usually your best bet, but I was catching a ton the first week in august last year. They were starting to turn but with a 6 fish limit you can really stock you freezer. Hopefully fish and game have their numbers all wrong. Any one been to the Russian latley? How are the raibows?

Russian (upper Kenai at powerline below ferry) was slow yesterday. I watched several flippers for an hour- no hook-ups.

I'd hedge my bets against this weekend, John.

Although July 15 is pretty much the mean date for that first wall of fish to begin assaulting the river, I'm betting it'll be a bit later since everything seems to be running a few days behind everywhere, even Bristol Bay.

Additionally, it seems we have higher passage of fish with the smaller tide exchanges. Tides are still pretty big this weekend.

An onshore breeze set up with smaller tides will keep most of that Kenai smell tight against the beach.... the fish are sure to come ashore and storm the river en masse. If we get an east wind next week, the regular Thursday beach opener could be the first really big day for the setnets. Friday and Saturday (21 and 22) could be phenomenal in the river.

But what do I know?

Sounds reasonable, doc. Thanks. . . and, hey, none of us knows as much as we think we do. . .
