Hi Everyone.
We are coming back to Alaska from Scotland again after to long . Only dates we could fit gets us arriving 29 July to 13 August. We are praying 2nd run of sockeye are a wee bit late and some silvers arrive early.
Anyway I’m interested in fishing some fresh flesh for bows/ dollies around the fish cleaning tables keani / Russian from the shore.
I have done a bit of research and tried tying some fleshy dolly llamas it’s been difficult getting rabbit strips in the right Colours but I tied these and just wanted some opinion before I tie more? I have added a purple and a black one for general swinging as well for your opinions
I’ve caught plenty trout and dollies all over the pen and up willow way drifting eggs but never tried flesh flys.
I’m also interested in tube flesh flies I can’t find how to tie them though. I found a link on here but it won’t open? So I just wrapped some rabbit round a plastic tube? Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.
Regards
Graham.

Those look pretty great to me! I imagine you'll do just fine with those. And as for late run reds, your timing is ideal. There should still be plenty of reds in the middle and upper Kenai and in the Russian.

I’d swing those for sure! Look awesome! Bird Creek (closer to Anchorage) will have silvers at that time frame and they love those dolly lama’s. The Russian will still be thick with reds for sure

Hi Brian.
Thanks for replying, if you think they are ok that will do for me as we all know having a wee bit of confidence in your fly makes a big difference to your fishing.
I just had a look back at some photos 2019 July 27th we were nailing sea liced reds in Soldotna It would be great if we have the same run this year.

If anyone has any links for tying tube flesh flys it would be appreciated.
Best regards
Graham.

Thanks urbanhillbilly.
Great news.
Again this gives me confidence to tie more. I've never managed to hook a silver in Bird , I have had some chrome chums and a load of pinks.
One time early October we nailed them in the arm at low tide further up !

Best regards
Graham.

Great looking flies for sure! The sockeye runs have continued to be strong since then. I think last year they set a new record in Bristol Bay. And it will be fun this year with no pinks to contend with when going after the silvers.

Hi 4merguide.
Thanks I haven’t tied flys for years apart from AOJ krill killers Ive never tied rabbit strips or tandem flies so it’s good fun to learn.
Great news on the sockeye runs .
I ll be watching over the next few months to see how things pan out for sure.
We hope to hit Willow and Clear Creek as well for the Chums mostly if our timing is right and the dolly lamas will be good for them for sure.
Cheers

Montana creek above the highway is great for Chums, but Willow is also a good choice for Chums. By far my favorite salmon on a fly rod and hardest fighting IMO……..

Totally agree. Hopefully we find them at willow or Clear Creek last 2 trips we missed them . Am I right in thinking run timing for chums can vary a good deal?

Chum are usually in the park streams by mid July and will be there in good numbers until august. Yeah them out of Montana isn’t great for chums, willow is but up stream is better IMO.
