A freind of mine was down there opening morning........I don't know how he ended up but after a couple of hours only had nine.

I swung by Kasilof last night on my way back from homor. High tide was at 7:00pm, put my net in the water at 5:45. The bigger reds/silvers are always in at and before high tide, then the smaller 15-18" come in when the tide goes out. Dont be a fouled, you can get twice the fish when the tide is going back out, most folks think the runh is over. I caught 19 in 3 hours, most others folks got 8-11 fish........my luck was good this day.
My secrets:
1- dip from the other side of the river, park at the endo of the road an ATV to the mouth
2- barely keep the whole net under water at high tide
3- keep the top 10-20% of net above water when the tide is going back out.
4- look for the ripple at low tide, the 18" love the low tide ripple
5- dip netting is 50% luck IMO, move your net around if you dont get one for 20 or so minutes

Agree with you on the luck factor...went down to Chitina 14th and 15th when the huge number of fish were supposed to be coming by...but they were not moving and so got a few(and a king, which made the trip a lot better) but overall most everybody was having little success..couple days later boom! they move and people limit out in hours...still what ever the luck is you still gotta have your net in the water...hard work can maximize yield against thin pickings

Commercial nets lifted saturday, 7-1-06 at 1900.
Catches immediately picked up and was excellent by the next tide.
Yesterday there were lots of fish coming in and everyone was catching them.

I am looking forward to trying dipnetting for reds this year. Can anyone tell me directions on how to get to the beach from Soldotna. Thanks and good fishing to All!

4- Take this road all the way to the ocean, its about 10 minutes long, and it will turn into gravel during the last 1/2 mile or so.
5- I would park at the end of the raod and ride a ATV to the mouth of the kasilof
6- the kasilof mouth will be about 3/4 mile to your right when your at the end of this road
other tips:
1- get here about 2 hours before the high tide
2- the tide moves up the river bank about 100 yards or so, so your going to have to move your cooler and/or gear a bunch
3- dont be afraid to get close to someone who is netting a bunch of fish
4- stick around for low tide, now the river will look like a small creek......

DO be afraid to get too close to someone who's netting fish. In other words, it's not a good idea to block off someone's net with your net. Others may have different opinions, but that's how I feel about it and I won't block off someone else's net or take someone else's spot when they leave the water to throw a fish into the cooler.

I guess I should have been more clear, I sometimes forget common sense is not that common, nor is the act of respecting people. Its safe to say you should take note of the distance that most people are standing apart and go this as a standard unit of measurement.

This was my first year dipnetting. I have to say it was a spectacle over the 4th. We were extremely successfull because we bought two excellent boat nets from Ron Fuller recommended by Michael Strahan on this website, and used our drift boat launched from the beach. It's a strange way to fish, more like harvesting. People have a different attitude too, quite aggressive. It seems some are sort of grumpy, there to fill their limit, like it's a job they have to do each year like painting their house, not like people pulling out their fly rod to catch and release wild rainbows. It was amazing, especially when that chrome bright 65 pound king swam into the net. I thought my net got caught in the prop or something. I cried a tear as I watched it swim a way, and got a little irritated when another guy netted one about 35 pounds and drug it across the mud into his tent. It was also amazing to watch the commercial fleet drop their nets accross the river and everyone leaves because they know it's over. When those drift nets went down fish were flying and splashing and you know they had 1000 fish in the first 5 minutes. What a great thing for an economy.

It's a good thing that your king got away. Unless the regs have changed from last year, you're not allowed to keep a dipnet-caught king on the Kasilof. So you would have had to let him go, anyway. As far as the person who kept his king....
I believe the Kenai's a different story.

A person I know dipped the Kasilof mid-day yesterday. They got four reds fishing with one net in only and hour-and-a-half, with the terminal gill-net fishery in the water. When there's a big push of fish, all the gill-nets in the world can't get them all.
Some days are good, some aren't. The only thing for sure is that to get a fish you've got to have a net in the water.

Some days are good, some aren't. The only thing for sure is that to get a fish you've got to have a net in the water.

I guess I did not adequately describe the King experience. It did not get away, I took a beautiful picture carefully handling the giant chrome-bright hen, then revived her easily and she swam away. I know the regs before I go anywhere on a river. I did see people keep some, just drug them across the mud towards their tent, and it really made me angry. I was more than happy with a great picture though, since I already had about six hours of cleaning and packaging reds to do.

Still glad I posted that Kings can't be kept on the Kasilof because there are others who don't read the regs and might not know it. Unfortunately too, there are those who couldn't care less about the regs and are only concerned about what's in it for them and what they can get away with. Too bad a person can't make a citizen's arrest. I would LOVE to have the job of catching and ticketing people who don't play by the rules.
