Jims Creek Black Bear Hunting

I am looking for a good black bear hunting spot in the Jims Creek area for the middle of June 2011; any suggestions?

In the event that area isn't good during that time, or there are much better areas in 14 A, I would appreciate any helpful adivce.

The Jims Creek area east of Palmer gets hit hard all spring, summer, and fall by 4-wheelers and everybody else fishing or whatever. A lot of bears get shot around there at bait stations or simply as "targets-of-opportunity" by fishermen or moose hunters, as if many moose still existed there. So while the habitat is excellant and black bears can be found, almost anywhere else will be better for more mature bears.

For quality pelt condition, mid June is the absolute latest I would hunt. Frankly, for pelt condition I would not hunt after the end of May. Others may disagree...

Hopefully somebody else will provide further guidance on where you might better invest your time and efforts.....and welcome to the forum with your first post/thread.

all the old timers say across the river from sutton up to chicaloon. I could never verify that as i didnt have a boat, but they said the hunting could get hairy!

Pretty much you'd be competing with baiters. Find a decent path,smaller amounts of devils club...haha, up the mountainsides and sit and glass and glass and glass. That being said I once almost hit a black bear on a wheeler by the old glenn bridge. We scared the crap out of each other and I gave the wheeler a but more gas as I flipped her around!!

Mid June hides will be in poor condition. Note: There are tour guides with caravans of 4-wheelers running tourists up and down the Knik River to the Glacier and back, also a practice area for pilots to practice landings. You would have a better wilderness experience going back the "Mills Creek" Trail & up into Juneau Creek. Lots of bears, and few humans, plus you can Mountain bike in and out. Enjoy your hunt.
