Good luck to you guys. I'm waiting two more weeks before I take the wife and fly into the Chugach for her first chance at a ram. I wish I was in the field. Full curls and heavy packs. Stay safe.

Hey whats everyones pack weigh?? Got mine down to 59#'s with complete camp, gun, stove, food and clothes. Daughters went 37#'s with gun, clothes, and Crown ( I hid it for her to pack for me ,lol )..
Ha! Awesome. I'll file that idea away for when my boys start coming along.
As for pack weight, I intentionally don't weigh mine unless I'm flying with a weight restriction. As for this year, for my first try I'm just riding the ATV into my campsite, so no weight concerns on my end. Not expecting a super high chance of success, but glad to climb a mountain or two before starting work.

Ahhh... I cannot sleep! I am flying in to hunt the DS203 (delta tag) tomorrow. My pack is way too heavy, but I don't care. I've been lightning, running, hiking, and scanning Google Earth since February. While I never went in to scout my area - since it's a bit of a walk, I feel very ready for the hunt. Honestly, I would be thrilled to bang a ram, but I am just so thrilled to be above tree line, smelling the open country. I promise to do a write-up regardless of kill - since any hunt in sheep country is a success!

Two cow tags in the house so this year is all about getting the kids out for moose. I doubt I will even pick up a harvest tag for sheep this fall.

Hate, hate. The residents accusing guides of 'locking up' sheep areas are referring to guides with one or more aircraft (that will be spotting sheep all season as they move hunters, move camps, haul meat, pick up hunters, drop off hunters, drop off assistant guides to establish camps, haul supplies, haul fuel, etc.). They aren't referring to single guy operations that rely on aircraft to put them in all their different hunting locations but don't actually own one to use all season to spot game on back and forth trips. Sorry for the brief hijack. Good luck this fall to all sheep hunters- I hope to read stories of lots of sheep in the mountains and full curl rams in your packs.

I side with you. I am appalled by the comment from Jake -- whom I would of expected more -- that an "area" would be locked up so as to pursue sheep for commercial gain. I am even more aghast that he would participate in that sort of behavior. For one thing, I believe that "locking up" an airstrip on State land is in violation of the Portable Camp Commercial Use Permit authorized most Registered/Master Guides. For another, is blatantly unethical and not anywhere even close to how things were conducted when I came into the industry, forty-some years ago. But again, I'm astounded that Jake would even mention such atrocious and obviously aesthetically appalling conceptualization/ideology.

I am absolutely certain that Jake's comment was pure sarcasm. If you've read his contributions to past threads on the subject, that would be crystal clear.

I remember the day he called me on the telephone when he was first starting his own outfit and asked which drainages I was guiding in, so he wouldn't be infringing on my already established outfit. Just to be clear ......
I've had clients who've hunted with Jake and vice-versa. Personally, I think Mr. Jefferson is an exemplary guide and a fine man. For one thing, he is or was a man of faith, in the Biblical sense. For another, he is a good hunter and he is personable with his clients. Clients that I've had and whom hunted with Jake, never had anything bad to say about him. I have nothing bad to say about him, either. However, I was taken aback by his comments within this thread and based on what I've come to know about Mr. Jefferson, I had a hard time believing it was the same person posting those comments
