Is it just me?

Is it just me or is there a serious lack of common sense in awarding permits? Today's News Miner talks about Unit 20 either sex moose permits, just like they've done the last couple of years. I guess that they'll be issuing them based upon who shows up and waits in line first. Now, if I didn't have to work, maybe I could take my sleeping bag and spend the night in front of the Fish&Game office. That would be a lot of fun. I'm probably dumb enough to do it too, if I didn't have to work.

I'm sure that it'd be a lot of fun waiting in Nenana or Minto too. I really don't think that the locals would have any problem with me showing up. But, I don't think that I'd really get much sleep. I guess that people wait in huge lines for concerts. So, maybe that's the mentality here. Of course I won't be in line, because I have to make money to pay the bills.

On the "up" side, this system is probably more fair than the Nelchina caribou hunt.

Isn't this a registration permit?

Maybe the rush is to get to the woods ASAP before the hunt is closed. The river accessible zones have closed out in just a few days.

Just a thought

This is a registration hunt for September moose hunting. I don't think that I need to elaborate on how stupid and unfair this system is. For any limited permit hunt, the only fair thing is a drawing. We all pay taxes.

Drawing System

Drawing System

IMO....the drawing system needs to see the light of day also as there is just too much anecdotal evidence [whether factual or not] that indicates that there are problems in the system....do away with the "random" computer selection behind closed doors and get this process on stage in a community forum where actual applications are drawn by a girl scout.....

I have now stirred the crap for today......thanks for listening!

A girl scout Vern? Brilliant! Who, on earth, is more honest than a girl scout?

Frank, there's nothing unfair about a registration hunt. You usually go to the local fish and game office and register before hunting. They give you a set of rules for the hunt, and usually a map of the area, and let you know what the reporting requirements are. The difference between a registration hunt and a general season hunt is that registration hunts close by emergency order when a certain number of animals have been taken. The local biologist needs to stay on top of the harvest to make an informed decision on when to close the season. Hence, the reporting requirements. A regular hunt has a definite season that closes on a certain date. On a drawing hunt only a number of tags are given out, whatever fish and game decides the herd can stand and there is also a closing date on the season.

Anyone can get a registration permit. You don't need to wait in line. As was pointed out by Erik, you don't want to wait too long into the season to go or it may be over when you get there. You need to keep in contact with the local ADF&G office to make sure the season is still open.

Different registration hunt

Different registration hunt

Much ado,

I don't think that we're talking about the same hunt. I certainly don't need a lecture on the subject of registration vs general season hunts. Anyone on this forum knows the difference and the reasons for each one.

I was just venting a little with the original post. And, as long as it's in good taste, I don't see any harm in that. I enjoy reading about other people's frustrations about the system. I don't always agree but it'd be boring if I did.

The permits that I was talking about are for any moose in these certain areas. They are given out on a first come first served basis. You can read about it in Monday's Fairbanks News Miner. Then, you'll understand my subject. Good luck this season!

What Taxes do you pay? There is no limit on the number of permits available in the hunt you are talking about. What's unfair about unlimited permits? If you don't want to stand in line for the September hunt, go stand in line for the January-February hunt. In fact you don't even have to stand in line, you just have to be there on a specific day and walk in and get a permit.

if it is a stand in line

if it is a stand in line

Then at least you can pick one year, take the days off and get a permit. With the draw system you may NEVER get drawn. I stand in line for my musk ox registration permit, for at least a day at subzero temps, waiting in line in sept would be a breeze.

That wasn't a lecture Frank. Just pointing out the error of your misconceptions. There is nothing unfair about a registration hunt. Everyone has the same chance to hunt. I looked online at the News-Miner site but couldn't find the story you mentioned. If you have a link please post it.

BS hunt

BS hunt

The state Department of Fish and Game will issue 120 permits for two different registration permit hunts in the Minto Flats and Tanana Flats on Wednesday in Fairbanks, Minto and Nenana.

One hundred permits will be issued for a registration permit hunt in the Minto Flats Management Area in game management unit 20B (RM775).

Forty permits will be issued in Fairbanks, 36 in Minto and 24 in Nenana.

The permits allow hunters to shoot any moose.

Permits will be issued beginning at 10 a.m. on a first come, first served basis at the Department of Fish and Game in Fairbanks, Minto Lakeview Lodge in Minto and the Nenana Native Council Office in Nenana.

Twenty permits for antlerless moose will be issued for a registration hunt on the western Tanana Flats in unit 20A (RM768). Those permits will be issued only in Nenana at the Nenana Native Council Office.

This is BS plain and simple if you did not read the paper you were just out of luck and to bad for those of us that have to work.

Hunts

Does anyone rememebr the days when it was first come, first serve at the old Jewle lake Armory in Anchorage? It was a large block party with the same people setting up for the night starting Sunday afternoon. It got a little hectic but what I remember was everyone teling hunting stories all night and being tired the next morning.
While we did not get any drawing permits this year, I will keep paying my fees and hope that we draw the next year.

What is BS???

What is BS???

I don't know what you guys are whining about, heck you read it monday. Take two days off work to get in line and get a permit. I am sure that is what other people are doing to get the permits. They go to who wants them the most. If you are willing to make the sacrifice the permit can be yours. If your not, well then you don't want it bad enough. Heck where Alleninalaska lives they wait in line for 3 days in the subzero temps for a permit. If you want it you will do it.

P.S. Allen last year it was 15 below on musk ox drawing day :) but that was very unusual.

The Paper

The Paper

So now to hunt in Alaska you have to buy the news-miner and take time off of work. Sorry but I did not read that in the regs.

Are you serious?

Are you serious?

In your last post are you being serious horse? I don't know a single hunter who is serious about hunting in this state that does not take time off. The regulations do not say you have to take time off, they don't care who hunts and who doesn't. Let me guess you also complain when a hunting season starts on a weekday?

No I don't care when a hunt starts as long as they let us know in advance which they do in the reg book. But expecting people to read about a registration hunt in the Monday paper is pushing it. And as far as this hunt goes I realy don't care I'm guiding in another part of the state anyways. Plus if you knew how much time I take off to hunt and guide you would know that a day standing in line is just a drop in the bucket plus I work nights any way.

great then don't whine about time off work

great then don't whine about time off work

If one day is just a drop in the bucket then why bother complaining about it, which is what you did in the post before your last.
