Desert Rat from the Mexican border region.
I’ll be moving up to Alaska in August if all goes as planned.

Don’t have much fishing experience but I’ve hunted deer, moose, antelope, black bears and mountain lions. Been prowling around a bit on this forum and decided to join.

Since I’ll be getting there in late August/early September, don’t know exactly where I’ll be living yet, and likely be in the Anchorage, Eagle River, Palmer, or Wasilla area. The location will depend on where my job wants me and that can change quickly.

Looking forward to continuing learning by reading the forums and really looking forward to the move. Finally got rid of the baggage, ex wife, so I can move to where I want to be.

Thinking about filling my freezer with fish and deer for the first year as I’ll be considered a non resident. I was thinking of hunting Kodiak Island in December for deer. That will give me time to learn more about moose and caribou hunting before I become a resident.

Welcome to forum. You are quite ambitious with the hunting plans to fill the freezer as a non-resident. Those tags are going to cost you more than Sam's easily for meat. Nice if you can do it.

Up until six years ago the meat I ate was about 75% wild game meat I or my hunting partners killed.

Keep in mind that the deer we have up here aren't all that big. It will take more than a few of them to fill a freezer. Unless you are talking about the little freezer over the refrigerator.

I was thinking three deer plus fish.
I’m thinking, from what I’ve learned, that three deer would be easier to hunt than one caribou the first year.

I’m sure you are are a fine hunter but I will say that hunting these black tails is not like hunting deer down south. Took me a few years before I could steadily kill 3 or more a year. Maybe I just don’t know how to do it right.

Any tips?
I have not hunted where you intend. I like, ( dig ) hunting during the rut. In SE that begins late October and goes into December. Blow the call, be still and patient and wait 30-40 minutes. Don’t over blow and be very vigilant after the first call. Big brown fuzzies come readily to the sound.

Better living in Fairbanks. City ammenties, less people, better living than Wasilla. Dry cabin rentals cheaper and lots in Fairbanks.

Rumor has it that the State will be changing the limit for non-resident blacktail from three down to one for Kodiak. Not reflected in the current hunting regs, but it sounds like it will take affect July 1st. Just a heads up.

Its 1 Buck for non res,

there is some "caribou" on kodiak, you could go and get 1 buck and a caribou. The Adak hunt can be pretty tough, from what i understand its not what it use to be. If i was in your shoes i would fill up on fish and small game. Non res small game license is dirt cheap and you can scout out alot of areas for future big game hunting while shooting grouse, rabbits, ptarmigan and ducks. Another caribou option would be on the haul road.

Considering doing a moose hunt in the MatSu area. Looking at maps and trying to see where I might be able to hike in.
I’m willing to backpack in and likely won’t find anybody that wants to go with so I’ll probably fly solo.

Take it from me, a frequent solo hiker, you can get into some very bad situations alone in the bush. Make friends and find a hiking partner for when those situations come up. Way easier to avoid and sort out the bad incidents when they happen.

You want to go moose hunting?
I’m moving to Alaska August 23. My vehicle is coming by barge, I’m flying in, and I’ll be bringing a canoe too.
