HOW Would You Escape ANCHORAGE........???

I an emergency, there would be Zero hope of escaping south down the Seward Hwy. Some could fly out in private aircraft. Many would escape North till they encountered the clogged roads at Eagle River. Soon it would be "Gridlock". Snowmachine.....Maybe, ATV.....maybe, Boat out of Small Boat Harbor.

How would you escape Los Anchorage in an Emergency, With your family........???

You would have to be a lot more specific as to what the nature of the "emergency" we would be trying to escape from. Tsunami? Wouldn't even blink an eye since they would barely be able to get to the bluff at Kincaid (railroad area downtown might have some issues....). Earthquake? Once it's done, not much reason to leave after that since it's over by that point.

Thanks for your permission. Just kidding AGL. What I meant by my question was, what is the implied emergency...what are we trying to escape from? Based on current events, I would assume (I know, I know) that you meant a tsunami/earthquake. If so, the tsunami will cut off the highway north and south...so there's no where to run anyways. If it's an eathquake, there's no real escape anyways. As much as I don't want to go through "the big one", I think the best option for most is to ride it out and be part of history.

It would completely depend on what it was specifically. For many of those, stick my finger in the air, firgure out the wind direction and go the other way. I have skis, boots, bikes, boats, and a car. I can go in any direction necessary depending on the situation at hand.

And your family......and what if the wind shifts......? And what if you escape in -21* below then what......? The point is for many, they never gave this a thought. Think how many will load the monster Motorhome and head to some place they camped last summer, only to discover a 7' high berm of ice & snow, and no way to turn-around, and 75 motor homes behind them trying to escape.

Forget terrorists, earthquakes, fires and such. What everyone should really be worried about is zombies. I know there are several out there like me that go to bed and dream about killing zombies. My zombie go bag is by the door.

It's probably just that most people KNOW how few exits there are and accept it. There really isn't much to do about it, really. we are better off than those of you who, for example, live in Hope or Sunrise with even fewer options.

If all else fails we could certainly pay a few million to some think tank to come up with enough reasons to get the Feds to pay for a bridge to Pt Mac.

One thing I always find funny is that some people actually believe that there is a weapon or method that would eliminate electricity and "send us back to the dark ages" for an extended period of time. Two years? Really?

That is what the people of Japan thought Last Week.......Now the country is on rolling black-outs, and their stock market is closed, and down 20% in two days.

Dont go to Anchorage in the first place and you wont have to escape. Those city folk wont know what to do in an emergency so most would just roll over and die once they ran out of granola and raisin boxes.

Well first of all I want to thank AGL4now for this subject its one we all should think about. The first things that should be addressed is food and water for a week, basic medical supplies, compact am fm radio for news updates, handgun and ammo for self protection, and shelter. The ability to leave Anchorage may not exist and therefore hunkering down will be the order of the day. If you have thought ahead you will have all the fore mentioned things in a pack, rescue may take several days to a week prepare now to survive. Locate a safe place to hunker down and hold on for Rescue teams. Now go and do the right thing.

Seriously though, while the scenarios are arguably plausible, (not too sure about two years without power) most of them can apply to any place in the state...or on the planet for that manner. So that brings me back to my question of "why would you want to escape Anchorage in an emergency?" I think the first question to ask yourself is, "do I run away, or stay and help?" Not everyone is leaving Japan...

I got a job in the Interior...escaped 8 years ago.

Not so sure you could, would, or should "flee" in an emergency. Seems like the wrong time to start executing an exit strategy...

These type of questions are meant to stimulate thinking of those who never considered the possibility. The time to learn how to change a flat tire is not at -22* below in the dark of night, with no idea that the tools are attached to the radiator and not in the trunk.
