I few of us are considering a DIY Black Bear/Blacktail trip in last week of August for Blacktail and first week September for Black Bear on Prince of Wales Island. Is the bear hunting any good that time of year? We are on a budget just like everybody else where is the best areas to locate our base out of Northern/Central/Southern part of the island? We are looking to do mostly day trips if possible and be back at a cabin etc. at night. We might do a overnight trip once or twice. If it would be better to do a spike camp then we would consider it for sure. Any help would be helpful to this newbie!

Are you aware of the regulations that prohibit the use of the road system for bear hunting in Sept?

As 270 said, essentially it is closed to bear hunting in the fall for the budget minded DIY hunter. If you did want a bear you'd have to fly or rent a boat. If you aren't extremely familiar with the island streams and tides it is a real challenge to have a good hunt in the fall. Pass on it and do a spring trip.

If bears is the priority head north in the fall on the Kenai. If deer is a priority August is fine.

Good luck,

Mike
