For discussion. Looking at the Derby info, the northern boundary for the derby this year is up near Anchor Point. ADFG has a Special King Salmon Management Area that is north of Bluff Point.

Derby information says that anglers can have two fish per day and two in possession "above" Bluff Point. I don't think that is right? The way I see it is that anglers in the derby, Bluff Point and south can harvest two kings per day and have two in possession. Those anglers in the derby who wish to fish north of Bluff Point and South of Anchor Point (derby boundary) can only keep one 20"+ King and have 1 20"+ King in possession. So for those anglers in the derby that are fishing north of Bluff Point and South of Anchor Point if an angler keeps a 15lbr they are done fishing. If the fishing is good that would be a hard call. If, north of Bluff Point but South of Anchor Point an angler takes any 20"+ fish out of the water it must be retained and counts toward that areas bag limit of 1. You'd have to decide at the water level with the fish still in the water whether it was a keeper or try for another that might be bigger.

But more importantly, the Derby does not IMO have the right information posted. I'll leave it open for me to be wrong and not reading the Derby info right and not reading the ADFG regs right.

Forecast for derby day doesn't look terrible. Doesn't look like the epic weather from last year.

You can take one fish >20" above Bluff Point, then take a second fish below Bluff Point and be legal, but not the other way around.

Good point! Didn’t even think of it that way but makes sense. Not sure where I’m headed on derby day. I’ve done 3-4 ft stuff in the past and everyone just gets sick . We shall see.

North of Bluff Point 1 per day/ 1 in possession (any size)

South of Bluff Point 2 per day/ 2 in possession (any size)

Tunnel Vision got skunked on the Kings. Towards the end of the day we had a king on just about to the net and it spit the hook. Probably at 10 lbs or under. Definitely a tough day. Three separate times we thought we had a good one on and it ended up being halibut, go figure. The middle halibut was 37 lbs and you can imagine the fight that put up on a salmon rod/tackle. I thought we had the derby winner for sure! Lots of line burning, head shaking, etc. Oh well, there is always next year. Tunnel Vision is getting towed to Whittier this weekend for PWS shrimping and king fishing.

Anyone want to make a guess if the weather will cooperate for this weekend?

Pretty sad when an Alaskan Outdoor Forum doesn't even talk about the winning fish of the Winter King tournament anymore. I had to look it up. Sheeshe! https://www.homerwinterking.com/tournament.php?id=3059
Yeh. I didn’t feel like anyone on this board cared about it. That damn tournament sucked up like 3 weeks of my life with prep and delays!! I saw 3 fish landed all day. Sounded like best action was between High Bluffs and Anchor Point.

We were all waiting for you to chime in, knowing how much time you spend there!!!! ;) Good Lord willing, I'll be in next year.

Just curious how has participation been in the past and were they all locals? Could it be that the older generation participation rate is declining as they age like hunting has seen a decline. I can't imagine taking a boat out of storage in March and traveling all that ways to participate in something like that. Seems like a lot of work.

Every year, more and more are coming from North of the Peninsula. This year, participation seemed down and I can think of a couple reasons why. With the amount of snow this year, a lot of people simply could not keep or get their boats dug out. Another reason is because of the derby getting postponed for a week, hard and expensive to drag down to Homer 2 weekends in a row.

I think the fact the event was held in “Winter” verses the “Spring” dates the last two years also cut down on the field. The delay makes it tough to head back. I burned all my kitchen passes with my wife going down twice.
