Help On Permit Area's

Any info would be appreciated...I am pretty new to the hunting thing and would like some help on finding a decent, accessible (by hiking or atv) area's to put in for...I live in the valley, am a single mom, work FT & (OT) but will have occasional 3 day weekends until job ends in sept/oct. I have only shot a Mt Goat in 2004 and would like to put in for anything possible. I do have a couple friends that could maybe fly me somewhere, but cant gaurentee that. I value all the many years experience shown on this forum so I thought this would be a great place to start...

Are you new to Alaska, or just new to hunting? Anyway, its good to see there is a female on the forum!

If you have an ATV Point Mackenzie DM 402 is good to put in for. There are a lot trails and powerlines around this area. DM407 (Sutton/Buffalo Mine Road/King's Mountain) is decent too, abundance of trails.

Without ATV access DM 406 is good. You can go to Hatcher's Pass and glass above the Motherlode. Also DM 403 (Big Lake) is good for road hunting along Burma Road and others.

Depending on where you live, I would put in for one of these four permits. I put in for 402/406/407 and have drawn there a few times and have done well.

Thanks for the info! I moved to Soldotna 4/02 from washington state and just moved to valley in January 2006. Not hunted much although would love to more. Killed 2 coyotes in washington & the goat up at Lost Lake 9/04. Thats it for my experience...

Don't know if you are interested in the following, since you've moved off the Kenai, but you could apply for the Homer area cow moose hunt(DM549) and/or the Kenai Mountains caribou (DC001). ATV access is limited on both, but you can certainly hunt both on foot. The Kenai mts hunt has a reputation as a bit of a hike, but I keep hearing rumors of caribou coming out of some pretty accessible places in that hunt, too.
