ranger is a 20 month old purebred reg yellow lab. he is not spayed. Did great at retrieving last fall. he's very energetic. he has been a whiner though especially as of late. I'll get him in the truck, and 5-10 minutes in to the trip he'll be whining and I can't seem to get him to stop. I have tried being nice saying quiet and no and even the roled up newspaper and sternly corrected but nothing seems to work. It is like he has an anxiety disorder and always has energy. in fact he is out in the garage right now doing it. Its really annoying in the vehicle. it is the high pitched whine that seems to say he wants something. It is not that he has to go pee or poo or is hungry but it seems that he always has to be on the go. of course he loves the attention and I know he'll take all you can give him. it is not like I don't spend enough time with him. anyone else run into the whining problem??? help!!!!

I have a shepard/husky mix and he talks all the time. He will lay down by the back sliding door and just whine away. Same thing on the needing or wanting to do something. I have just gotten used to it and I look at it this way. It's like living near a RR crossing. After awhile you don't even hear the whistle. Just learned to live with it.

I have a yellow lab/Great Pyrenees cross that whine when he gets into the car or he wants in the house. He is nuetered so that does not stop the whining. He is 3 years old 180 pounds and has started marking scent in the house. Not sure what I am going to do. Right now it is wash every thing he peed on down with vingar and an ass kicking. I can live with the whining I just can not stand the peeing.

I got a 10 year old female gsp. She has been a bad whiner since she was a puppy. She has got better in the car, at least until we hit a dirt road. When out in the field she is fine until I stop walking then she hits that full on hyper whine. Unless she is running, there is whining. Nothing I have done has helped.

Worst of all she taught my beagle how to do it.

Same here with all our dogs. I thought it was my driving. I've yelled from the drivers seat out of frustration and hit the top of the crate, grabbed them and said quiet, I learned frightning them will not fix it if they are truely anxious.

A few things help and it will take time. More exposure to the car. Take them everywhere, crate train them slowly, for short times. Only let them out of the crate when they stop whinning no matter for how brief a moment. There are a number of "treat balls" to stuff peanut butter to keep them busy. If they are not interested in the treat ball you can be sure its real axiety and hitting or yelling will not work .When they are quiet PRAISE and reward them. Our rehomed sled dog took about 9 months to finally become secure in the crate and in the car.

Jack a rescued WPG was in shelters because he was a constant barker. Raise your hand or move quickly and he hits the ground, apparently "ass kicking" doesn't work but may make the human feel better, if they that kind person who enjoys hitting someone. [[[[[shaking head]]]]] Jack's whining is subsiding with more training and attention and we were able to move to barkcollar which has gotten his barking under contol as well as his whinning.

Hahaha, my beagle needed no help in the whining department, he's been a whiner from the start....I still love em though, he's an awesome dog, and he's gaining value as the vet bill the last two days has been about 4 bills. Lesson learned, check those ass glands!!!

i'm kind of curious, did your dogs get to go for car/truck rides as pups? I took my dog to the lake almost every other day for years and would never whine, maybe I was just one of the lucky ones. =| I miss that dog

I also have a 20 month old yellow Lab. He is the quietest dog I've ever owned, rarely a whine, whimper or bark. He chews! And Omg does he chew! I've learned that the more time I spend with him the less it occurs. The whining could, in part at least, be played by genetics. That's your dogs 'thing' as chewing is my dogs'. High energy doggy's no doubt! But I'm finding that lab's are very obedient and loyal and I love that!!!

When I picked up Lucy, a Lab at 8 1/2 weeks, she cried (screamed) all the way home for an hour and a half. I couldn't believe it, every other pup fell asleep in my lap or on the seat next to me. Over 8 years she has been in the car a lot and now has become somewhat relaxed but prefers to be in a crate. With the other dogs I trade off one or two dogs usually taking the newest rescue. Often rescued dogs have not had good experiences in vehicles or no experience. For the WPG he loves to ride in the car but hates to be left alone so I take him to get him used to me leaving and returning. Just when I think he's getting used to it I return to a totally steamed up car and a frantic dog. I forgot to turn the bark collar on. When I did I came back to a fairly calm dog because he didnt go to that point of being frantic. Another dog raised in a sled dog kennel rarely was in a vehicle or in the real world. When I turn the car on to warm up he heads for his outdoor kennel, I've even had to chase him and take him to the car on leash. Hes getting better as well. It just takes time and consistency.

I picked up my first registered lb 15 years ago. A Female from a out of Peaches and Cream and Honest Abe's last litter before he retired. I got her at 8 weeks of age and she whined from day one. I figured that it was separation issues. After about 3 months of this she had not stopped so I called the breeder I got her from and was informed that her mother and grandmother where whiners also. A family trait. The mother and grandmother never out grew it, and neither did my dog. I just got used to it and learned to ignore it. After 13 years together, she developed severe health issues and is no longer with us. Even with the whining problem, she was the best dog I've ever had.

Well being genetics was merely a guess but I guess here's a little confirmation. Seems its a trait that would cause a reputable breeder to choose to not pass on by not breeding the dogs with this issue. Same goes for my dog and his chewing possibly. Hmm....

I had a Peaches and Cream pup, although she was by Hiwood Trooper not Honest Abe. My Peaches pup was not a whiner to any great extent.

In genetics like almost everything else, some get it and some don't. Might as well throw dice when your breeding dogs.

Has anyone suggested taking Ranger to the vet? Maybe he is in pain??

Or if the whining is just in the truck (which it sounds like it's not) maybe he gets carsick?
My golden gets car sick occasionally, and when he does, he whines... I know it's car sickness by the breakfast he leaves on the seat :shot:

He is under-stimulated. Walk him 5 miles a day and see how things go...

Yup, ole Thunder whined from the moment i picked him up until the day he went to meet his maker. 9+years I listened to that whine, I hated it, it drove me nuts, almost went to the funny farm over it, I wanted to clean out his ears with a .45 more times than you can imagine, heck I wanted to eat a bullet too, and for about two weeks after his death I missed the hell out of it. Now, I looked at him on the fireplace mantle in his little tin can, and I truly enjoy the peace and quiet.

I have two dogs now for some stupid reason and neither one is a whiner....its the greatest thing in the world.
