Hey guys,
Any of you out there with the hudson bay and the mud buddy mini hd 23 h.p.?

How's it work? Is the extra few h.p. effective on the hudson bay or is it at the point of diminishing returns.
Mud Buddy is discontinuing the 18 h.p. btw.

I'm ordering a 23 but they have one used 18 and I'd like some feedback if there is any experience with them.

I know Kandik likes his 18 but I'd like to hear from someone with the 23.

Thanks!

When I can afford another mud motor, this will be the one to go on my bigger canoe. I need to rework the stern and turn it into a 21 footer.

I have the 23 hp.. I can't compare it to the 18 hp but for just a few more pounds I decided to go for it.
The speeds and general characteristics that Kandik posted apply to the 23 hp.
I burn about a gallon an hour with 5-600 lbs of weight...
I used 26 gals of gas on a yukon trip I took from Circle to the Charley and Kandik rivers.
2700 rpm is my cruise speed for about 17 mph..
Kandik has a different width HB, so he gets more speed I think than the standard width HB.

budman5 ....

How many miles do you think that 26 gallons accounted for?

I thought that the 18hp model and the 23hp model both weigh about 166#. Am I wrong? And what does each model weigh?

Another of our forum members has a new 23hp MB to put on his HB this season. I'm looking forward to hearing all the results and opinions so I can make a more informed choice myself.

Rick I'd average it to 300 plus...taking into account upstream Yukon and then upriver on the charley and kandik..
I did several trips up the kandik.. because the new cabin was finished at the mouth..so we were the first to stay there ..a fantastic job by the gent who built it by the way...you are going to have some fun this year with your new boat....please share what trips you take...
to get the average I used 12 mph x 26 gal. hope that helps... I will take more fuel next time..probably 35 gal...

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info

Thanks for the info.
Kandik does have the Alagash legal canoe which I think is a tad slimmer.
I went with the 23 in any case. a bit more power, a bunch more money. I should have it in a couple of weeks. Enough time to do a few repairs on the boat.
Can't wait.

BTW, I have a 24h.p. Honda Scavenger brand long tailed mud motor that I am selling if anyone is interested. $1500.00
Good motor but too slow for me on long trips.
Weighs about 165 lbs.
It has a grain-auger style prop so it can take some serious abuse by rocks and gravel.
Picture attached- I think.

That's right .You definitely want a tachometer on the motor. Best way to quickly get the most efficient speed and gas
consumption. Also, the tach has an hour meter which is great for maintenance.

tachometer

tachometer

I got mine direct from MB, Clint Hovey, sales manager. Reeds can also order them for the same price. Not sure why reeds does not carry any????

Do they come with a tachometer or is that an add on that I would need to tell them to put on?
