Been a while since I posted anything so bare with me. One of my best friends happened to win the Alaska big game equivalent of the Power Ball. He drew the Haul Road Muskox draw tag. My question to you all is, historically speaking, is there any particular place where muskox seem to be more numerous on the Dalton? I was up there in 2019 with a few buddies and had to stop one of them from trying to touch a bull on the side of the road. We definitely saw a few around and they seemed to all be between Slide Mountain and a little south of Pump Station 2. I was curious if that was inline with most peoples experience as well or if you guys had seen otherwise.

When I was driving the north end of the haul road frequently some years back the musk ox sighting appeared to be fairly random - they just showed up all over with no real pattern I could tell.

Since the hunt is off the haul road- is it an archery only hunt? My recollection is that firearms are prohibited for 5 miles on each side.

Quite a while back I camped at the confluence of the Sag and Lupine Rivers and there was a large herd hanging around there close to our camp. I would stop on the road and glass that area too. If I remember correctly, you can see a lot of that country from the road before committing. Good luck on your hunt.

It’s not just archery. The hunt is in 26b east of the Dalton Hwy, but archery only in the DHCMA-5mile corridor.

It would be quite the pack job hauling a musk ox out since it is a non-motorized area. Hope for snow and use an Otter sled.
