Haul Rd Success, Finally

Drove up from Anchorage with a group of locals for 2 weeks and got skunked. I shot at one but shot 35 and he was 50. Out of 12 of us there were only 2 Caribou taken and one was with a rifle five miles from the rd. I'm told conditions were very hot and that kept them on the ice fields.

I was distraught after this hunt and hung out in Anchorage for a day before getting remotivated. I still had 2 weeks in Alaska so I decided to try again, this time alone unfortunately, Gas and truck rental broke me.

I got this one the first day up. My first, so its a trophy to me, shot him at 55 yards, he laid down at 67. It was pretty amazing

I was shooting Easton Axis arrows with 3 blade, 100 grain Muzzy's from a Mathews LX

I'm going to do a european mount until I get my house built then I'll have him mounted, he has a very nice cape, big white beard? one of the reasons I shot him as opposed to a smaller slightly better horned bull. I passed on a small one in the first hunt trying for a grand daddy and misjudged the distance so I had a range finder every time afterward and took the first shot I had at a bull, after 2 weeks and all the effort any bull was a trophy to me.

After everything the hunt was a complete success I had all the meat made into and equal amount of Pepper sticks, summer sausage, Italian, Bratwurst and Garlic and cheese hot dogs. I'm amazed at the quality of it all.

I left a gut pile and the esopaogus and some pissed ravens, I felt it was better for the meat to leave it intact as much as possible, the processor was happy and I didn't mind the extra weight, only being 80 yards from the road.

Great persistence!! We leave to head up to the haul road on Friday night, looks warm, you are in a Tshirt, seems a bit odd for this time of year, what were the temps? Were you just seeing single bou, or were there any groups? Hope I get a chance as well.

For Caribou I personally like the sausage and other stuff better to each his own I guess, now moose is alltogether better for steaks and roasts. I was very impressed with moose meat. He wasn't rutting and very fat.

Yea all he costs were worth it, just easier when splitting but worth it nonetheless.

Weather was hot mid 60's with most of the bou I saw in real small groups, I saw very few bulls lots of cows and calves.
