Any one been outta the tractor launch yet? I know there operating already. Are the fish starting to bite or move in close say within five miles? What time does that fish packaging place open where we buy bait? Been a few years since we been down there and gonna try for a trip next weekend If it sounds like its gonna lay down at all by Saturday. Thanks fellas

Not sure about the bait store but as to halibut being around, the season is upon us. Should be more fishing moving into the shallows everyday, there was a 10lb butt caught off lands end yesterday. I would be highly suprised if you even had to go out 5 mi to get into consistent fish at this point. Also might be worth trolling around for kings.

I'd have to agree on the halibut and kings. I fish out of Homer, so can't help much on the bait store or how people are actually doing that are getting launched by the tractors, but I can't imagine you'd have much trouble catching halibut within 5 miles of shore. I caught a small halibut (maybe 10 lbs.) trolling the Bluffs in about 70 ft. of water a couple of days ago, so I don't have any doubt there are at least some fish close in now.

And the spawning kings should be heading up the inlet by now, so I'd definitely give that a shot as well.

Not to hijack but I want to try my luck soon as well. Can drift fishing work out. Most folks i see are anchored. What should I look for on the charts? All of CI looks pretty well the same to me. Depth? If I lost power to my main motor is the current powerful enough to negate what a kicker can do? I was in that situation once on another guys boat in a swollen Willamette river and it was a crappy feeling!

Drift fishing works, but IMO it is not nearly as effective as anchoring, especially in cook inlet, I think drifting works better in the sound. As far as your kicker, it really depends on the boat/kicker size. Generally, the current runs parallel to the shore, so if you head in towards the shore, you wouldn't be fighting the current as bad as if you were traveling parallel to the shore against the current.

It's funny because you'll probably find about a 50/50 mix of people that will say drift fishing is more effective vs. people saying they think anchoring is more effective. IMHO drift fishing is more effective and that's what I do probably about 90% of the time. But a lot of it is just situational. I tend to fish spots that are just more conducive to it. When you get further north in the inlet like off of Deep Creek the tidal current can be brutal and it makes doing either rather difficult. That's why you'll see so many boats troll for kings when the tide is running and then head for halibut waters when the tide is heading toward slack. It's kind of funny when you're trolling for kings you can almost set your clock by when all the boats will disappear to chase flat fish.

Yeah, it's pretty hard to judge what your kicker will be able to do for you without knowing a whole lot of variables. It's going to depend on how fast the current is, how heavy your boat is, how much power you can get from it, etc., etc. As hoose35 says the current pretty much runs parallel to shore, so if you just point your bow toward shore you will eventually reach it. You might end up in Homer, but at least you'll be on shore.

That's all some people do. I used to anchor all the time, but when the sharks got bad and they found you it was hard to keep your bait down there long enough for a halibut to get it. If you drift, try and get out to fish about 1-2 hours before the ebb, during the ebb, and 1-2 hours after.

Yeah, if you see me up that way in the next few weeks it's only because I got lost (wink, wink, nudge, nudge, say no more).:)

Will be there in the next few weeks fishing for the first time. Hoping the fishing will be spot on by then!
