I am sure everyone that lives in Alaska does not pay 800-1000+ bucks for a coat from North Face and the other big names, right? What would you recommend as a good cold weather coat for outside/everyday use? What are the pros and cons of the coat you recommend? Not looking for a fashion coat..looking for something that keeps you warm in any weather without being too terribly bulky and hard to move around in. What do you look for and what is just "fluff"..? Thanks.

All but one of my coats are from thrift stores… Layers is definitely the ticket, especially if you’re going to be working up a sweat. Thermals, a good vest for the core, down (650 or 1000 fill depending on temps), and always my Marmot triple layer Gore-Tex shell on top to block any wind or precipitation. Only one I bought new was my Eddie Bauer 650 down jacket from Costco for $50. All the others were thrift store finds for under $15.

Goretex shell over wool or fleece with poly or silk undergarments works well with activity. Carhartt makes quite a number of great coats/jackets for chores that are durable, warm, not too bulky, and allow you to move. I have 3 of them. I do love wool and down vests to wear under a shell as well. Layers are great to strip off when getting sweaty, or put on as needed. Also allows you the ability to take off something wet or torn.

Where I live the winter temps are typically -10 to -35, so there are colder places. When it chilly I will typically wear three layers with the two outer layers with zippers to help regulate heat and a durable outer shell that is wind proof. The layers are typically wool or wool blend, I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than $150 for my outer layer and I typically get them at end of the season sales. The expensive stuff is the domain of city folks.
