Can I get a g4 signal from Naked island? Was thinking of upgrading to G4 but the ACS guy I talked with said the Naked Island cell tower may not be compatible. So just wondering if anyone else with a G4 phone is getting any kind of signal in PWS, 1X would be fine.

My wife got some signal around Main bay the other day, she has ATT... I had nothing with my ACS HTC OneX... You should stick with a CDMA phone if you want signal out there... the new phones say they switch down but seldom if ever do I get much.

I can make calls and send text messages out there, but I don't get any data - no 4g for me on AT&T.

I didn't know AT&T had a tower on naked.
The reason we went with ACS is because of the Naked tower. When I am within eye sight of Naked just about anywhere in the sound I get a signal, within a few miles 1X and data; great to access the NOAA site for weather. I don't want to loose that upgrading to a G4 phone from G3.

I think ATT roams with Copper River Telecom or something... they have a tower out there too. I used to get some signal around Perry and main with my old HTC Desire (3G CDMA) phone but with the new 4G LTE phone I get nothing untill I can see Whittier.

My wifes signal around Main was cell only, no data.

G4 in Southeast Alaska

G4 in Southeast Alaska

Wife just switched us to G4. I was previously able to check Bouys and weather data as well as use the net in various locations around Southeast. Now, nothing. Once away from Auke Bay, zip. I can do texting in a few locations.

ACS roams off the Copper Valley Cellular network, works great some places, some not. Not sure about ATT, although I did hear they put a tower on Hinchinbrook. I wonder if you can find a tower map somewhere? That could be really helpful.

With ACS, don't get a prepaid and expect it to work out there. I made that mistake. Got the prepaid, state-wide coverage phone. Went to Cordova to work, and it wouldn't work. Eventually I found out that it's because the state-wide prepaid only works in some places. Apparently Cordova isn't in Alaska as far as ACS is concerned. ACS's deal with Copper Valley excludes calls out. I could receive calls, but couldn't make any. Useful in an emergency.....

it should work if you dial 1-907 and number.

Copper Valley Cellular Network have 3G service out on the sound around Naked and down to Green Island.

I thought it was interesting that I had a guest this summer that got way better coverage than me. I have att, and I do get coverage around naked, but only voice and no data coverage. Oh yea, his provider? Verizon.

I had the same experience a couple of years ago. Was out on a boat in PWS out of Valdez, I had ATT and no signal and the guys from out of state with Verizon were getting enough signal to listen to Pandora while we fished.

Verizon shares with ACS and vis/versa. I get data out there and that's why I use ACS.

We boat of Valdez and I love the fact my Company Supplied ATT phone works no where in PWS. However my wife got a GCI monthly nation wide talk only plan and it worked well around Naked and Green island. It was pretty handy to call people almost to Green from Glacier Island and confirm that the seas were building all the way and tell them we were just going to meet up in the morning.

A CDMA phone(Verizon, copper valley, should have 4G sometime soon. And are actually pretty good all across the sound. A GMA phone, (ATT, GCI, Cordova Telephone..) not so much. Very spotty and data of any kind is very limited. ACS, I don't remember which system they use, but I know they are not on my "short list" of providers for service in PWS

So, that brings up a general question: Short of flying to Seattle, is there any way to get a Verizon phone in Alaska yet?

Not yet, I call them about once every 3 months. Copper Valley has partnered with them for coming 4G. If they plan to put it in the sound or not I do not know. Verizon has air cards with AK numbers for internet, but not phones yet.

I just read an article in Alaska Business Monthly or something like that that says they opened a store on Northern Lights in Anchorage in July. You can also get their phones at retail outlets like Best Buy and Costco according to it. I'll have to check into that. I'm caught on both sides of the state, though; I need something that works in Anchorage, the Sound, the road system in general, and Prudhoe Bay. Not sure if they have service on the slope where I work but I'll try to find out.

I will be calling tomorrow to check on that info. CDMA signal is much faster/stronger than an GMA network. I know for a fact that a Verizon/CDMA phone works over much of the state quite well, but can't say about the slope. I do know, that a Verizon/CDMA phone must have ALL the latest software updates to work outside of a Urban area in AK, and you have to specifically ask Verizon for them prior to getting to a remote area, though I imagine that will be resolved once Verizon gets to AK. I've been very happy with Copper Valley, state wide, they just are not allowed to offer the I phone.

I read it a little bit wrong...they didn't open a store, they opened a regional office. Not sure if there is a store there or not. But, you can apparently get the phones now at the listed retailers, or by calling them up.

I'm getting a bit of conflicting information. It looks like it's data only, no voice until early 2014? But I know people are using Verizon phones, so I'm totally confused at this point. If I have time I'll try to call for clarification tomorrow on exactly what's going on.

I think Verizon is planning to use there data network for voice in AK. VOIP on a cell.

Never see 4g data in the sound, you need a fiber optic line to the tower.

Sent from my phone while I should be working.
