To everybody, it applies to:

I'm not meaning to be UNFRIENDLY. I like friends.

I just dunno NUTHIN about this "Friends and Contacts" option on this forum.

I'd prefer friendly people to simply PM me, if they have anything to say to this ole Fart, friendly or otherwise.

Thanks
Smitty of the North

I hear ya Smitty, it's over my head too . . . or I just don't see the point in learning about it and adding another list of things to check.

Yeah, me too.

Sometimes I get a Friends Request, if that's what you call it, and I dunno what to do, don't wanna mess with it, and don't wanna be "unfriendly".

Great post Smitty. The whole friending thing everywhere on the web gives me jock itch. I don't understand it, don't want it, and can't wait for it to go away from AOD. Reminds me of popularity contests on the playground when I was in the 3rd grade. Yeah, I learned to dislike it a looooooooong time ago, way before the first computer. Us oldfarts gotta unite on some things.

It is the insecure computer nerds (without a real life) way of getting a group hug.

WOW, lots of negativity. I just use it because it makes it easy to get in contact with people I am friends with. Instead of dorking around trying to find a post or search the member list for their profile to send them a PM, I just hit my friends list and there they are.

Social media is here to stay, it is used by the military and is a big catalyst behind the "revolutions" going on in the middle east. I am not saying that you should get involved with any aspect of it but the fact is that it is a game changer in the modern world and far more than just "computer nerds with no real life"

Well put BB. My daughter set me up a Facebook account..pictures, profile and all. When I finally looked at it three weeks later I had 50 friend requests, some form people I didn't know! It was clear to me that her intent when she set it up was to make me look at my best. All pitures were at social functions in suit and tie...not one pitcure of me with a gun, dead critter, wearing cammo or on my bike in leathers. My own daughter putting on the dog on my behalf. Onced I replaced the suit and tie pictures with some blowed up gut pile pictures the do gooders went a way and quit asking to be my friends! I've since deactivated the account because of the popularity contest aspect you mentioned........I'm a social introvert by choice with nothing to prove and that thinking doesn't go hand in hand with the Facebook mentality!

I have had some good phone conversations with Smitty! He is a witty character and I count him as a good friend but we aren't on each others friends list either and it's ok!

I figure that if I have friends, then they already know how to get in touch with me, and I them. Friends, real friends, requires more than a bleeping electronic device, which I REFUSE to get! Friends takes years and experience. Just because I am supposed to believe that everything is a matter of instant gratification, well, frick 'em if they can't take a joke. How's that for friendly?

Well I’m not negative about it and figure to each their own. Like Smitty I just don’t want to mess with it and don’t want to seem unfriendly when I don’t respond so I end up sending PMs saying I don’t mess with it. I tried to learn it and it was a pain and being someone that likes to keep myself to myself mostly it just rubbed me all wrong. I understand the power of it, networking has always been powerful and this just takes it up thirty notches but, as I always have, I’d rather be doing other things with my time.

My daughter did the same thing but did a bit better on the selection of pictures. She included several of me fishing including one with a young brown bear watching me. Also had several me with some nice silvers and included the pistol on my hip.

I've gotten a number of "friends" requests on facebook but most of them are scams from those wanting to use your account for various messages and ads. So far I haven't been contacted by any long lost girl friends or unknown children or anyone owing me money :)

Kind of funny, got an ex or two on my facebook account. One was an atheist when we went out years ago, now she is attending seminary. I don't really feel the need to update mine every time I wipe my hind end but it has been enjoyable to catch up with old friends and acquaintances. It doesn't take long to learn how to actually use them and set up groups of like minded friends. It is nice if I am going to be rolling through FBX to be able to just drop a note there instead of calling everyone to let them know I will be in town. Same deal if I want to hit the lake for some fishing and BS'ing. Just one stop drop a post and any of my friends that may interested can join in. Makes it really easy to plan things, sort of like the KR cleanup or River boat roundup posts here on the forum but only my friends can see it. To each their own but I have found it doesn't wast time, rather it makes planning easier and faster which is a good thing.

I got my first friend request two days ago. And I've been here for six years!

I didn't know the option existed up until about two months ago. :)

I have two friends on my account. Both are there accidentally because I didn't know what it meant when asking for a friend request. Now I just pass on them.

As for Facebook. I stay away from that place like the plague.

This ain't your kid's facebook account

I'm with you too Smitty. I add friends to my list VERY sparingly. They're either people I really do spend in person time with, or they're people I've hand a series of PMs with where I've ended up offering them some specific and private help in an outdoors question.

I just don't get it when a guy that is unfriendly as hell to me in public posts sends me a "friend request". I don't get the point of that.

So far as the other kind, and the friends I do show on my home page here, they and they alone can see my albums, and a little bit of private info regarding me. I don't mind sharing that with them.

I didn't myspace when it first came out, have never twittered or tweeted or whatever, and I don't facebook, or blog. I "get it" to those that stress the importance of social networks. I have a relative that blogs the color and consistency of every BM, and though I like him, I sure quit reading his blog and pages. There's a lot to be said for face to face real life.

I'm with you fellows. This forum must be full of old farts, myself included! I spend too much time just cruising the forums to try and figure out all the bells and whistles on hear. Never knew there was a reputation option or how to use it till about a month ago. Had about 3 reputation comments on me and couldn't figure out what or how they were doing them until I accidently discovered the button one day!

As for Facebook, I finally caved to the years of pressure from wife and daughters and they helped me set one up. Been there maybe a dozen times, but find it boring and a waste of time. For what it's worth, never sent a text message either, don't know how and no desire to learn! I just think we are heading in the wrong direction with all this technology, especially when I see the folks I work with can't get through an 8 hour shift without spending about half of it texting!

I see it as folks that are somewhat like minded and sometimes give support away from the cyber world
