Anyone have some good recomendations on a place I can take the wife for some fishing and camping? Hopefully somewhere not too far out of the anchorage area, but not restricted to anchorage (if that makes sense?)? Thanks for any help.

When are you planning on going? Also, are you set on catching dinner, or would you be OK with catching lots of fish that aren't the best eating (i.e. pinks, grayling, etc.)? Helpful to know your priorities before making recommendations.

Sorry forgot to add that, planning on this weekend, I could care less what kind of fish we catch but my buddy's wife has never been fishing and wouldn't eat fish up until a few months ago and wants to catch a fish so she can say she did the whole process. And this being her first time fishing some decent eating fish would be nice. But not over crowded.

I am curious to this also as my wife and I are coming in from the bush next week and want to do a little bit of fishing before we head south. We don't really care what we catch and don't care about keeping anything, just would like to catch a bunch of fish. Any ideas? We are willing to drive around anywhere the good fishin will be.

I posted a similar thread a few days ago. We moved up here from Homer and don't like the summer crowds so much. We need to find out of the way places to camp and fish. I am used to fishing in the Bush in Ontario, 50 miles off the highway system with no people, or only 1-2 per 2 week trip. Thats the kind of camping I miss, where I can get off the beaten path and have peace and quiet and good fishin
Love to hear any ideas... I know how people are with keeping things secret, thats understandable... but we are those who don't pollute or tear stuff up, we leave it as we found it and enjoy what nature has to offer...

Unfortunately, you've chosen a weekend that is a little early for most fishing, at least as far as # of options and uncrowded conditions. Right now the top fish on most people's list is King Salmon. Two problems with this, though - crowds come with the territory, and the runs seem to be a little light so far this year. People are catching fish, but from the reports I hear it's been slow - not exactly the kind of experience you want for a first timer.
As for catching lots of fish, really your only option right now is fishing the lakes for trout/landlocked salmon/grayling. They're not as good eating as salmon, in my humble opinion, but you've got a better shot at catching a few right now. As the summer progresses there will be a wider variety of streams holding various salmon species, thus the crowds will diminish (a bit) in some places.
Of course, I could be missing some diamond-in-the-rough spots that others are aware of. Any other ideas, folks?

Nancy Lakes Canoe trail system...
Lot's of room to get away and decent pike (some rainbows as well) action to be had. Was there this past weekend and had a ball...and plenty of solitude if yer willing to put in some paddling....

How long of a trip do you usually plan when going? Like take off from town on Friday night and get back Sunday night? Feasible?
I think it maybe one of our first canoe trips out to Nancy lake, I was looking at it with great interest while longing for a canoe! haha

It varies. Lynx Lake loop is "do-able" in 2 days but more enjoyable with 3-4 to spare. Plenty of lakes to choose from though and even a day trip there can be productive.
