I have been watching the fish count at Miles Lake at the ADFG website, and have noticed that this year is extremely late. I noticed that the water levels are down as well which should result in lower numbers. But when the numbers jump from 6,8,24,26 to 0, then up to 102 then back to 18, and 18 again.

How accurate is this thing, and could it be reporting some odd numbers?

Those counts are only for the North Bank, which historically is around 10% of the total passage. Most of the fish travel up the south bank. I'm guessing that there probably is still too much ice in the river/bank to put in the south bank sonar.

Ice...

Ice...

I heard that today at work... Makes total sense.

I wonder if this will push the opening of the Chitna Dipnet Season back??

The ice is out on both sides of the river at miles lake and the counters(sonar) is in for both sides. Commercial fleet has been held back from fishing since the 23rd of may. With the big tides last week a lot of fish should be moving into the river. It takes aprox 5-7 days for the fish to reach the counter once they enter the river from the gulf.

Last count at the lake was over 50,000. The first Chitina run should be fun.
