Is there anywhere on the Denali to pan for some gold? Headed up there in a few weeks and thought about bringing my gear. Thanks!

I believe 35' either side of the center line is public panning/sluicing on every creek it. You should verify that's still in effect with the Division of Mining. So you can just stop and spend a day prospecting next to/under the bridge/culvert. Past that 35' line I would imagine any decent gold spot is claimed. But you never know.

Beyond that there's lots of info online about the gold areas along the hwy. Once you locate an area that interests you, use the akmapper website to check claim status. The Valdez Creek mine was a famous one back in the day.

There are a few places where you can go gold panning in Denali National Park. One popular spot is along the Nenana River, which flows through the park. You can find access points to the river from the George Parks Highway. Another option is to visit the historic gold-mining town of Kantishna, located deep in the park. There are several tours that take visitors to Kantishna, and some include the opportunity to pan for gold. However, it's important to note that there are regulations in place for recreational gold panning in Denali National Park, and you'll need to obtain a permit before you start. You can get more information about gold panning regulations and permits from the park's visitor center or website.

BLM map of current mining claims. This can keep you out of trouble. I was panning once and a guy approached me in an angry manner. I was 60 miles from the nearest town and 3-4 miles off road. He said I was on someone's claim. I explained to him that the claim had to have the boundaries marked and BLM had no active claims on file in the area. He immediately chilled a bit. Eventually he became a friend as I had replaced him at the job he once had, and we had common friends.
