Denali Highway

Hi all, Anyone recommend putting some sort of tire saver inside your tires, such as that Green Slime, to prevent flats on the Denali Highway? We are going to drive it this summer and thought it might help prevent some heartache on an unpaved road. Any other tips about driving the Denali would be appreciated also. Anyone have a favorite fishing spot they wanna give up?

Many tire places will not fix tires that have stuff in them.

We have made several trips on the Denali Highway on the same set of tires that are on our RV.

Get an Alaska Milepost.

Consider joining the Good Sam Club and get thier emergency roadside assistance.

Most any clear water stream and many lakes will have fish.

Agreed. I despise working on any tire that has slime in it. Take at least 2 spares. Local BLM half ton pickups were upgraded to E rated tires and that solved their flat problems.

As stated, get a higher rated tire and the majority of issues with road debris flats will be solved.

Bring a tire plug kit with extra plugs, and a compressor to refill the tire.

And slow down. There is no reason to be driving 60 mph out there just because its a "highway."

It is interesting to hear people talk about all of the 'flat' tires on the Denali. Yes there are a lot of sharp rocks, but it seems that the common factor is people driving TOO FAST for the gravel. It does help to have good tires to begain with.
There are lots of places to fish and camp on the whole road. Try Clear Warter creek and even Valdez Creek.

Proper inflation, proper speed and due diligence should do the trick on Alaska roads. Michigan spring pot holes on the other hand...you're screwed.

I have suffered a flat on the Denali but it was a combination of speed and freshly bladed road with all the fun sharp rocks. Bring two spares as previously mentioned and a plug kit. The trick is to find the flat before it's too late
