December kodiak road hunt???

ok so i am trying to do an economical hunt. this brought me to kodiak since a friend has a vehicle. i might be able to borrow and can get a ticket for 112 dollars. i want to park and hike in, camp for a few days and fly home. i will be by myself. i have read that road hunting closes oct 31. is this true. could not find in the regs where it said this. probably overlooked it though. i also found that if you hunt south of saltery creek you are off of the road hunting area... i have never done a blacktail hunt and have been researching as much as i could. still want to look around. i think the deer should be mostly off the mountains??? any other info would be great...

ok the last question is. if i get to kodiak and try to fly out from kodiak just far enough to get to some animals around can i get some decent pliced trips since i am one man that would take a smaller plane and would be a 10 minute fligt???? .vance johnson

theres deer on the road system and some freakin' great bucks at that. don't ever figure the deer are "off" the mountains, first thing i do is glass high, every time no matter what time of year it is.
I belive rifle season closes oct 31st and it becomes primative weapons after that...someone might correct me ehre, i don't have the regs in front of me. Theres a good four wheeler trail heads back towards lake Mia near olds river, get back by the lake and get high...ummm up on the hill. Other great place that gets little pressure is the west side of pasagshak bay, it'd take a man to hunt up on top of those two mountains but there are great deer there, i saw them last fall with my bear hunter. that would be a hike in kinda hunt.
As far as flying, not to many pilots fly smaller aircraft down there, there is one cub pilot that i know of and the rest fly 206's or equivalant. Once you get off the road system the bag limit go to three deer, where if your on the road its only one deer. Chances are pretty high that you won't be able to drive the saltery river road, looks good on a map, but for the most part thats only a four wheeler route.
I guess it all comes down to how much you wanna spend, three deer tags, a non resident hunting license and plane ticket and your at 500 bucks already, toss on a charter flight for about 250 or more ( for your 10 mintue flight...equals 40 min of flying @ about 300 and hour) Figure your gonna blow and easy grand. less you jsut live off granola bars and don't have anything mounted. but the deer are there adn its a great hunt, i'd go for broke, spend a few extra dollars and fly out somewhere. check saltery lake lodge sometimes they'll have good deals on hosting deer hunters. might actually be cheaper.

First, the road system closes Oct 31. Then it's open for two weeks for bow or muzzle loader. One deer bag limit.

Second, if I'm hunting on foot, I don't neccessarily want to go to Saltery cove to hunt the other side. That's a popular hunt by ATV for the locals and it gets hit pretty hard. It would be frustrating to walk over there and have ATV's buzzing by you.

It used to be possible to hike into Sharatine Bay from Antone Larson Bay to hunt off the road system, but a local in Antone Larson Bay got upset with people riding ATV's through his place to hunt "his" deer and convinced ADF&G to move the line from Crag Point to Sharatin Creek at the head of Sharatine Bay and effectively killed that possibility.

Personally, that time of year I'd fly up to Afognak, or over into the Uganik/Uganik Is/Terror Bay area. As was pointed out by BRWNBR if you're looking for cheap meat, a trip to Kodiak isn't exactly cheap. I think chartering a plane, they have a 1/2 hour minimum.

You might have better luck saving bucks if you could find a cheap flight from Homer to Shuyak.

In December, don't get your heart set on big racks. Most are falling off by then, whether before you see them or when they hit the ground after you shoot them.

yea i have found that not too many people will fly me out at that time either. now i know road hunting is closed. if you go onto the era airlines website they have a dividend special 112 to kodiak. here is the link http://www.flyera.com/documents/PFD2006ver2.pdf. i can also get a flight to homer for 83. anyone know anyone who will fly me to shuyak for a decent price. i really just want to get out and have a chance at animals. not too many other hunts i can do for cheap dec 16- 26 is there???? i really dont want to spend more than 300 on getting there.. thanks vance
